Description

1960 Austin Healey BN7 Mk. I s/n HBT7L/5152, Body No. 3031BN74872 White and Blue with a Black Seat Built from the ground up to be the fastest Austin Healey BN7 the world has ever seen, this is truly a no-expense-spared, vintage race and rally prepped, high performance car. Not readily adaptable to road use, other than for speed events such has La Carrera Panamericana, this car is most at home leading the pack in Historic Racing Group (HSR), or SCCA Vintage track events. Mechanically, this is built to be considerably stronger and more powerful than stock. The period correct Mk. I block has been dry-sumped and topped with an Australian built DMD aluminum roller rocker head. Triple Weber 45 DCOE carburetors were fitted with a cold air feed from the grille. The car was converted to Mallory electronic ignition, and has been fitted with a heavy duty Bosch alternator. A massive, late model, aluminum radiator and an oil cooler have been installed to cure the over heating problems common to Austin-Healeys. Ceramic heat shielding has been added to the firewall and transmission tunnel to keep the driver comfortable. The engine has dyno time only and the engine compartment is beautifully detailed. Power is fed though the Tilton high performance clutch to the Toyota Supra 5-speed gearbox. The suspension has been stiffened and lowered, and ventilated, oversized disc brakes have been squeezed under the enlarged Panasport wheels with Hoosier P215/60ZR15 race tires. Larger than stock anti-roll bars have been fitted, with neoprene mounting bushings. A Tilton master cylinder and pedal assembly has been installed with a discreet brake bias adjuster under the dash. The car has been lightened and stiffened every way possible. The interior has been completely gutted except for the bare essentials. A very comprehensive roll bar has been fabricated which extends as far forward as the back of the firewall, and to the suspension pickup points in the rear, which essentially makes this a very stiff, semi-tube frame car. Cosmetically, this example can be described as excellent, as racecars go. The quality of the paintwork is very high, both on the exterior and interior. The body panels all fit together nicely, with good gaps and straight gutters. Tasteful access panels have been constructed for easy access to the headers and carburetors, and a small air scoop has been added behind the hood, to admit fresh air to the cabin. The original dash shape has been kept, along with the original speedometer, water temperature, and oil pressure gauges. Aftermarket tachometer, amp, and oil temperature gauges have been fitted. A Sparco Evo seat with a 5-point safety harness has been installed for the driver. In the trunk is the fuel cell, and dry-sump tank. The underside has been nicely powder coated and detailed. All of the parts installed and fabrication work look to be of the highest quality. The car starts easily, and is very, very fast. The Tilton racing clutch is ideal for speed shifting the Toyota 5 Speed box, and the brakes stop the car with an aggressive quickness. None of the original equipment is present with the car to return it to stock, but it does come with a spare tire and wheel. Also with the car is a beautiful photo documentary of the build process, and all the documentation relating the equipment installed when the car was converted to a racer.
