Description

1960 Ferrari 250 PF Coupe Series II
s/n 1671GT, Engine no. 1671GT
Dark Red with Tan Leather

Introduced in 1960, the Series II 250GT Pinin Farina represented Ferrari’s increasing tendency towards production road cars, both to showcase the technology tested in racing, and to provide income to support racing. The cars were elegant, understated, and luxurious, and were available as both open and closed variants. Fitted with the venerable 3-litre V-12, the 250 GT is in many ways the quintessential classic Ferrari, and with generous space for both passengers and luggage, PF’s have always been excellent touring cars.

This particular car is a matching numbers, disc brake overdrive example that was delivered in grey with a black interior. It was equipped at the factory with a hood scoop, which is a treatment that was usually reserved for Cabriolets. The car spent the 1970’s in the area of Lake Tahoe in California, before being purchased by a long term Southern California owner in 1982, on the recommendation of the late Gerald Roush. This owner kept the car until 2002, and spent many years having the car mechanically and cosmetically restored its current excellent condition. According to the previous long term owner, most of the mechanical work was carried out by Bruno Borri, an ex-Ferrari race team mechanic who ran a shop in the Los Angeles area by the name of Modena. The engine was completely rebuilt and a new flywheel fitted, and the gearbox was also rebuilt. The suspension and braking systems were restored. Early in its life the car had been color changed to bright red, and was repainted to this current distinguished combination of deep red with proper tan leather interior. The paintwork was carried out by George Keledjian, and the body was found to be rust-free when it was repainted. The chrome was also renewed by Christiansen’s, and the interior entirely reupholstered as well. The insignias and badges were re-engraved.

The car remains in outstanding cosmetic condition. The paint was done to very high standards, and the body is extremely straight, has excellent gaps, and no rust in evidence at this time. The chrome is excellent throughout, save for light pitting on the side mirrors only. The car still has its Marchal head and reversing lamps- both in excellent condition- and the glass is in fine shape throughout. The rear lenses show a bit of aging, as does some of the rubber weatherstripping. The car sits on excellent polished 5.5X400 (RW 3598) Borrani wire wheels and Michelin 185X400 X series tires.

The interior is excellent as well, with very nice upholstery work throughout, with almost no patina. The instruments are unrestored and are excellent considering this. The carpets are very nice wool, and the headliner and visors are very nice. The steering wheel is in good shape, though the wood shows some patina. The car is fitted with a vintage Becker Mexico radio.

The engine compartment is very clean and nicely detailed. The appearance is very correct throughout, with the correct battery hold down, yellow fuel lines, and three-eared air cleaner nuts in place. The trunk is very nice as well, with the correct upholstery in place.

The underside is clean and neat, and representative of a well cared for, nicely aging restoration. Close inspection reveals the original crayoned Pinninfarina body number still on the transmission tunnel, and the chassis number stamped on the aluminum belly pan, which this car retains.

The car drives extremely nicely, with good power, and satisfying operation of all mechanical systems. The overdrive functions correctly, the car has a nice coherent feel of a fundamentally sound and properly maintained and prepared car.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a visually stunning and mechanically sorted example of this timeless and elegant 250 series Ferrari. This is an exceptionally solid car- benefiting from its long time dry climate, west coast ownership period- and remains a wonderfully sound example mechanically. While understated and elegant, the factory fitted hood scoop gives this PF Coupe a slightly more aggressive flair typical of the competition cars of the era. Ideal to casually show or drive in road rally events, and one of just 350 produced, this PF is in many ways the best value in 250 series Ferraris.
