Description

1960 Lotus Elite Series II Super 95 s/n EB 1993 Red with Silver Roof and Black Interior Like all Lotus cars from the Chapman era, the Elite is a technological marvel. Employing an almost entirely fiberglass monocoque chassis body unit, rack and pinion steering, disc brakes all round, and Lotus` usually sophisticated suspension design, the car was and remains a highly capable driver`s car. Its fiberglass construction and diminutive dimensions made for a light weight of about 1,300 pounds, yet the torsional rigidity of the platform is remarkable. The aerodynamic bodywork and mostly covered underside contributed to a coefficient of drag of just .29, a remarkable figure, even 50 years later. The car proved to be highly successful in competition, including six class wins in six years at Le Mans (where the car was reported to make 20mpg!). This particular car is a rare Series II Super 95 model that was factory fitted with twin Weber carburetors, which not all Super 95`s had. As such, the car is also a Bristol-bodied example (yes, the same Bristol), which enthusiasts appreciate for the higher level of craftsmanship. The car is also an original ZF gearbox car with a factory NACA duct. The car is cosmetically excellent, with very nice paintwork and brightwork. The metal trim is very nice throughout, and the car is currently wearing chromed wire wheels. The original set of painted wire wheels is included as well, though they would benefit from restoration. The headlamps are Lucas tripods in excellent condition, and the remainder of the glass and lights is excellent as well. The interior is in nice condition, with just the right amount of light patina. The carpets are excellent grey wool, while the dashboard and seats are very nice. The instruments and switches are excellent throughout. There are plenty of nice details to speak to the overall quality of the car, including the presence of the parcel tray beneath the left side dash, the original style Kangol safety belts, and the seatback pockets to contain the side windows. The trunk was included in the restoration, and was reupholstered using the same carpet as in the interior. It is very tidy throughout, and the original battery cover and jack are still in place and excellent. The engine compartment was also restored and presents well. It is very tidy and orderly, though slightly dirty. An afternoon`s work spent detailing would make a tremendous difference in the overall presentation. The underside is mostly covered as part of the construction technique and in the interest of aerodynamics. It is impressively clean and shows much evidence of proper care. Lotus` interesting design elements are visible as well in the suspension and the inclusion of inboard disc brakes at the rear. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire an excellent example of this sophisticated and charming car. Super 95`s are quite rare and the factory inclusion of Weber carburetors even more so. The ZF transmission and Bristol body add further appeal and enjoyment potential to the car, while the impressive cosmetic condition adds eye appeal as well. Further, this wonderful Lotus could be readily used for vintage racing, historic tours, or simply as a weekend runabout.
