1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Zagato I s/n AR10126 *00118*, engine no. AR00120*00748* Rosso Chiarro with Black Interior We are thrilled to offer this highly original and historically significant Giulietta Sprint Zagato. Sold new on February 28th, 1961, and fitted when new with Zagato competition body number 525, this example was a two-time participant of the Targa Florio road race in 1963 and 1964, driven by Giuseppe `Bismarck` Picciotto and Giuseppe Pirrone on both occasions, with a best result of 4th in class and 20th overall in 1964. It was first delivered to Sig. Renzo Mascheroni of Como, Italy in its current color combination of Rosso Chiarro with `plastic negro` (black vinyl interior). Mascheroni used the car in several minor events before selling to Picciotto of Trapani, Italy who painted the car blue and white and campaigned the car it in the Targa Florio with D`Angelo. Picciotto continued to race the car in regional events near his home in Trapani, Italy until the late 1960s. The car remained in `as raced` condition before being cosmetically cleaned up and sold to Benzo Usi of Japan in 1978. It is believed that this was the very first Alfa Romeo SZ I to reach Japan. Shortly after it arrived, s/n 0118 was acquired by notable Italian car enthusiast and collector Mr. Yoshiho Matsuda. It was incorporated into his Sports and Classic Car Museum, and was later displayed in the Karuizawa Classic Car Museum, also in Japan. The condition of this example is best described as solid and straight, but predominantly unrestored. The body is typical of Zagatos build quality but appears to have never been horrifically damaged as many competition cars were of its era. All the irreplaceable aluminum window surrounds are straight and in place. The windshield is in very good condition, with the balance of the windows in Plexiglas. The right side window is cracked. The side window jams appear to have the original window `fuzzies`, which would substantiate the unmolested nature of this cars history. The paint is fair. The chrome and aluminum trim is straight, and appears to be complete. The Carello headlights remain in good condition. This car sits on unrestored 15 inch wheels with Michelin 165 XZX tires. Much of the interior is possibly original, and in fair condition. The dash is unrestored. The seats are in good condition, while the rear package tray, headliner, and rear floor area shows moderate age. No carpets are fitted. Both the engine bay and trunk are representative of a 1960s era racing car, and are technically and structurally sound, but not detailed. The original and extremely rare `120 Series` competition engine remains in this car, making it a matching numbers example- a rarity among Sprint Zagatos. Mechanically, the car appears to be in quite good order. It starts easily, sounds responsive, and has good oil pressure, but has a vibration. The underside is very straight and solid with no obvious evidence of major repairs from rust or damage. This example has been fitted with front disc brakes. This wonderful little Zagato has been featured in The Alfa Romeo, 1980, in Gino Giugno`s definitive publication `La Targa Florio della Giulietta`, and in many of Mr. Yoshiho Matsuda`s Museum Catalogs between 1982 and 1997. The history of this remarkable racing car is known though the decades. s/n 0118 is an accepted car in the Sprint Zagato community and free of the historical rumors which plague many other examples. The Sprint Zagatos were the choice weapon in the small bore production class, dominating the Targa Florio with first, second, and third in class in 1964, and second, third, fourth, and sixth in class in 1965. Their competition alloy bodies kept the weight down to just 770 kgs, while the efficiency of the high revving 1300cc twin-cam motor produced 100 bph at 6500 rpm. Today, Sprint Zagatos are welcome entries to virtually all of the premier historic rally and race events around the globe. These events included the Retro Targa Florio, Tour Auto, Lemans Classic, Monterey Historics, and California Mille, among others. Increasingly, the Alfa Romeo SZ is regarded as one of the all time vintage cars for Italian and competition enthusiasts and there values are enjoying a rapid upswing accordingly.
