Description
1961 Aston Martin DB4 Series II Coupe
s/n DB4/527/R, motor number 370/538
Metallic Gray with Black Leather Interior
Best described as a mechanically excellent `driver`, this car is a fine example of Aston Martin`s legendary DB4. First introduced in 1958, the DB4 represented significant advances for Aston Martin. Clothed in elegant yet sporting coachwork that was constructed using Touring`s innovative `Superleggera` lightweight construction, and powered by an all-new 3.7 litre dual overhead cam inline six, the DB4 was a sophisticated but understated grand tourer.
This particular car is an early right hand drive example featuring the larger `GT`-type scoop with inset grille. It was originally sold in the United Kingdom under the registration XNJ 998 and was owned by an A. E. Sanders until 1984. Having been restored, the car is in very usable condition and is a matching numbers car. It was recently imported from Japan, where it was owned by an Aston Martin mechanic. As such, the car is in excellent mechanical condition. It drives extremely well with good oil pressure, good gearbox and brakes, and no smoke. The motor sounds very strong and has that fantastic carbureted inline-six growl. As a result of the importation, we received very little documentation, however, we encourage the most stringent of inspections to verify the car`s health.
Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression. It is finished in a non-original but extremely attractive metallic gray, with a black leather interior. Critical inspection reveals slightly irregular panel gaps to the doors, but the balance of the gaps is good. The chrome is very good, though the finish shows a bit of deterioration on the bumpers. The remainder of the chrome is very good to excellent, and the wire wheels are especially outstanding. All glass and lenses are excellent.
The interior presents itself very nicely. The dashboard, gauges, steering wheel, and carpets are excellent. The carpets were recently renewed in gray wool and are exceptional. The leather is generally very nice as well. The headliner and rear parcel shelf were redone in a suede-like material and are very nice, though the headliner shows some minor fit issues. The engine compartment appears to be correct and is presentable, but not detailed.
This car represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a usable example of a car that is enjoying staggering appreciation. This example runs and drives superbly and is also very attractive, yet it is not too nice to use regularly. Few cars are appreciating so rapidly, and indeed, Sports Car Market quotes the one year change at 27%.
