1961 Jaguar Mk. II Sedan
S/n 177407DN, Eng no. LA2845-8
Red with Tan Leather
Since the early 1960s, Jaguar`s Mk. II sedan has represented elegance and luxury in a sporting package with timeless styling. It is no surprise today that these cars remain popular with automotive enthusiasts since few cars boast the ability to carry four passengers comfortably while remaining strikingly beautiful. Moreover, they remain fairly affordable, even in today`s fast moving market.
This particular example saw a comprehensive restoration, starting in the mid-1990s and engine in 2001. The owner at the time of the restoration was a Jaguar enthusiast and had owned and restored several cars before this. The car was used very little after the restoration was finished, until being acquired by the current owner in 2006. As part of the restoration, the car was repainted, much of the chrome was refinished, the interior completely restored-including the gauges, dash and door wood. The engine bay, underside, and trunk were all redone. A new wiring harness, correct to original specs was installed as was a new clutch assembly and new shock absorbers. Based on the excellent compression and leak down readings, lack of oil leaks, and condition and appearance of the seals and gaskets, the motor looks to have been rebuilt as part of the restoration, although we do not have records on hand to confirm this. The odometer was reset at the time of the restoration, and now shows just 3,503 miles. The actual mileage logged from 1961 is not known.
Delivered by the factory with the highly desirable 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and fitted with a period correct factory wood wheel from an XKE, this Mk. II will appeal to the driving enthusiast. Further, a factory high compression head (9:1) has been fitted. The car starts easily and makes good power. The suspension and brakes have a tight and responsive feel, and overall driving impression is that of a freshly restored and well sorted car.
Cosmetically the car shows very well inside and out. The repaint was a high quality job, and shows virtually no evidence of use. The hood, trunk, and rear door gaps are all very good. The exterior chrome shows just very minor hazing and no weather related deterioration. The window glass and lenses are all intact and generally excellent. The car sits on very nice chrome wire wheels with near new Avon tires.
The interior is spectacular, and reflects the recent restoration work performed. The dash, door, and window surround wood is all excellent with no notable deterioration. The wool carpets are unmarked and like new front and rear. The gauges all look to have been restored. The XKE wood steering wheel, while not as fresh as the balance of the interior, is more than presentable. All the interior chrome was restored and is spotless. The headliner is of the correct material and is in outstanding condition.
The engine bay is beautifully detailed. The valve cover and float bowl aluminum are nicely polished, and the inner fenderwells and firewall nicely painted in appropriate semi-gloss black. Likewise, the underside is very tidy, and confirms that very few miles have been logged since the restoration was completed. What rust existed was removed during the restoration, or before, and the repairs were carried out in a professional manner. The trunk was restored with the balance of the car and shows beautifully.
With the car come records from the last two ownership periods, the original manual and pouch, the factory tool set, restored jack, and few other odds and ends which will prove helpful to the new owner.
