1961 Jaguar E-Type OTS Roadster
s/n 876447
Red with Red Interior and Black Inserts
In March of 1961 when the E-Type was unveiled to the world, it was a truly stunning and groundbreaking car. Its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons` value beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar`s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar`s legendary twin cam inline-6.
This particular car is a very early example, with flat floor and welded hood louvers. It was previously part of the famed Gene Ponder collection and received a driver quality restoration some years ago. The car was fitted with a fully synchronized transmission as well, as addition to the stylized two-tone red and black interior shared by many cars in the Ponder collection. In August of 2006, the car was treated to a full service, which included the following work: oil change and tune up, remove fuel tank and clean, clean carburetors and fuel lines, change brake fluid and reservoirs, change rear brake pads and inspect calipers, replace spark plugs, adjust points and timing, check lights, tighten chassis, stop exhaust leaks and rattles. The car was also road tested for 150 miles, and the compression was checked and found to be 175-180 psi on all six cylinders.
Cosmetically, this car is presentable, with a good quality repaint over straight panels. There are some areas of orange peel, but very little wear or aging: just a few chips and light scratches. The chrome is excellent, including on the wire wheels, which are fitted with smart Michelin X redline tires. The lights, lenses, and glass are excellent throughout.
The interior is in excellent condition and has obviously seen very little use since being restored. As an early example, this car has the more attractive aluminum dashboard trim on the center console. The two-tone upholstery was done to high standards, and is in excellent condition, while the carpets were well done and remain in almost new condition as well. The car is fitted with a newer Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.
The engine compartment and trunk have both been well restored. The spare has also been restored and is fitted with a matching redline tire. The engine compartment has been nicely detailed and the original glass washer bottle is still present. An electric auxiliary fan has been added to keep the car running cool as well.
The underside is tidy and solid, and shows evidence of much mechanical renewal completed no doubt as part of the restoration. The transmission is a fully synchronized item from a later car, which brings welcome improvements in drivability over the unsychronized `Moss crash box` usually seen on early cars.
This is an opportunity to acquire a nice, usable, and unique example of this, Jaguar`s seminal sports car of the sixties. This example with its unique early production features, but later synchromesh transmission provides the best of both worlds, while its cosmetic condition will encourage the new owner to proudly use the car as much as he or she likes. The fitment of a luggage rack further expands the car`s touring potential, while the inclusion of a correct owner`s manual adds value as well.
