Description

1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster s/n 875529 motor no. R 1702-9 Navy Blue with Grey Leather Interior In March of 1961 when the E-Type was unveiled to the world, it was a truly stunning and groundbreaking car. Its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons` values beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar`s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar`s legendary twin cam inline-6. This particular car is in the same specification that one would have seen in 1961. It was meticulously restored to original specification right down to the nylon Dunlop tires. It is a very early car, featuring flat floors and welded bonnet louvers. The bonnet releases are internal however, suggesting that this is an unusual `interim` car. This car was restored at a cost of $120,000 in the late eighties. During the restoration, the car was stripped to bare metal, prepped and painted, the engine was rebuilt with many new components, all of the instruments were rebuilt, and a new mohair top and complete Bartlett interior were also installed. The gearbox and rear end were opened, inspected and renewed as necessary, and then resealed. It was shown in approximately half a dozen JCNA events and received several 100 point scores. It was then stored for about 12 years. Today, the car remains in dazzling condition, with only mild wear since the complete restoration. The paint is an extremely high quality job and now shows slight wear marks, but no cracking or chips at all. The panel gaps are generally good and the doors shut easily, though there is a bit of gap irregularity on the trunk lid. The chrome has survived quite well, with only one flaw of significance, on the right rear bumper. All of the glass and lights are excellent, including the correct Lucas `tripod` headlamps. The rubber is all very nice and looks as though it was fitted yesterday. The top is very nice, inside and out, and the frame has been correctly finished, right down to the leather pull straps on the inside. It fits correctly and the rear window is clear. Inside, the car is really outstanding. The quality of the materials and workmanship is first rate, from the seats to the carpets to all the various dash bits. The iconic steering is in excellent order in all respects, as are all gauges and switches. A period Radiomobile radio is fitted as well. The engine compartment and trunk are both representative of the quality and thoroughness of the restoration. The engine compartment is extremely clean and correct, with the exception of the fitment of a modern battery. All shrouding, finishes, and even the glass washer fluid bottle are present. The trunk is very nice as well, with correct material upholstery and jack. This is an extremely fine example for the purist. It is highly correct and representative of the very earliest E-Types produced, which had a number of features that did not survive the entire production life of the car. The level of restoration is extremely good, making this car a rare opportunity to acquire a car that is essentially the same as it was in 1961.
