Description

1961 Porsche 356 B Super 90 GT Coupe
s/n 115382, Engine no. 804184
Etna Blue with Black Leather

The Porsche 356, close to stock or highly modified, has enjoyed much success in rallying, the 24 hours of Le Mans, the 1000 km Buenos Aires, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana, as well as many other important car racing events.

Several Porsche 356s were stripped down in weight, and were modified by the factory in order to have better performance and handling for competition purposes. A few notable examples include the Porsche 356 SL, and the Porsche 356 Carrera GT, and the Porsche 356 Super 90 GT.

The Super 90 GT was designed to replace the DOHC Carrera GT in certain classes. The Carrera GT, while innovative, was more expensive, and proved troublesome in terms of engine reliability. The Super 90 GT was equipped with the more reliable and easier to service push rod 1600cc engine, but was otherwise basically identical to the Carrera GT in terms of specification. Features included special gear ratios, RSK-type brakes, the use of aluminum in the body construction, Plexiglas windows, and non-wind up side windows, among other minor weight saving details. The finished product was a full 200 pounds lighter than the standard 356 B street car, making them eminently potent competition vehicles in the C Production class and equivalent classes, worldwide.

Although less expensive than their 4-cam counterpart, the Super 90 GT was clearly for the racing enthusiast, and had a staggeringly expensive base price tag of $5,551. Perhaps because of this, Super 90 GTs are exceedingly rare, twice as rare as Carrera GTs, with just 5 being constructed during 1961.

This particular example was produced in March of 1961, delivered new to Sweden, originally finished in Slate Grey (6001) with black interior, and equipped with alloy wheels, an anti-theft security device, and ventilated chrome brakes. It has been the subject of an extensive and comprehensive tub-up restoration, and is in exceptional mechanical and cosmetic condition above and below.

Very recently, considerable sorting and fine tuning was performed by Canepa Design, with a specific emphasis placed on minimizing road and wind noise for long distance touring. The carburetors were tuned and synched, the shift and throttle linkage adjusted, the car aligned, valves adjusted, and 3M Cleargaurd installed on the frontal edges. Considerable other work was done to perfect the car cosmetically and mechanically.

Accordingly, in its current form, the car is ready for competition, road rally, or concourse events. The car runs and drives as it should, and its cosmetic presentation is virtually impossible to fault. The paint, panel condition and alignment, engine bay, and interior are all superb. The underside is impeccable. We welcome an in-person inspection to confirm the exceedingly high caliber of the restoration work and the correctness of equipment and details.

Included with the sale is an informative binder of historical documentation, Certificate of Authenticity confirming this as a factory built Super 90 GT, a copy of Porsche’s build sheet, work receipts from Cavallino Holdings, work receipts from Canepa Design, the original tool roll with tools, a fan belt and dash cloth, correspondence from Porsche confirming the car’s original delivery with a Super 90 power plant, a Historical Technical Passport approving this car for FIA class GTP-1 (1947-1961), and photo documentation relating to the work performed at Canepa Design.

Exceptionally rare, in wonderful condition, and accompanied by its Historical Technical Passport, this Super 90 GT represents a “world car”- a well suited entry to virtually every prestigious historic motoring venue from Le Mans Classic to the Rennsport Reunion.
