High Quality Restoration of Desirable Silver Cloud II Convertible
1961 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II Drophead Coupe by H.J. Mulliner
s/n SZD 415 motor no. P4529
Silver and Black with Red Leather Interior
The Silver Cloud, which replaced the R-type and Silver Dawn models, made its predecessor look decidedly old-fashioned, and represented the last of the separate-frame Rolls-Royces. As such, it was the last of the cars that could be fitted with custom coach-built bodies. This is one such car, with convertible bodywork by H.J. Mulliner, a legend within the Rolls Royce world. Since the factory did not offer an open version of the `standard steel` saloon, customers seeking open cars were obliged to contact a coachbuilder to fulfill that request. The earliest cars were powered by a development of the large six-cylinder engine from the earlier cars, but the introduction of the Silver Cloud II in 1959 saw the introduction of their all-new 6.2 litre aluminum alloy V8. Power steering and power brakes were standard, as was a four-speed automatic transmission. Just 107 special-bodied Silver Cloud II`s were made, of which 52 were H.J. Mulliner dropheads.
This particular car is a right hand drive example that was originally registered in the United Kingdom as ESK 749. It has seen a comprehensive high quality restoration and remains in outstanding condition.
The car is cosmetically excellent with an extremely high quality paint job that shows almost no wear or aging at all. The pin striping is hand done and is an attractive deep red in color. The chrome is all excellent throughout and very high quality work, with no pitting or haze present. The headlamps and fog lamps are both correct Lucas items and are in as new condition, while the remainder of the glass and lenses are very good as well. There is a small amount of delamination of the windscreen on the right edge, and a few small hairline cracks in one of the turn signal lenses. The rubber seal to the windscreen is new, and there is also a badge bar fitted below the grille.
The interior is equally stunning with tremendous amounts of high quality wood, leather, and wool carpeting. The seats show almost no wear and have an extremely fresh feel, as do the carpets, which are done in a smart combination of medium light grey with red leather edging. There are black lambswool overmats as well, and the chrome trim is all very fine. The wood is extremely lustrous though there is a handful of cracks on the dashboard. The door cappings, picnic tables, and other wood trim are in as-new condition. The sill panels and door shuts are detailed to excellent standards.
The trunk is extremely well done too, which speaks to the thoroughness of the restoration. In lesser restorations, the trunk is frequently where corners are cut, or it is altogether omitted, but this car features a thoroughly restored trunk with refinished trim as well as the original tools and jack, including the tool kit under the carpet, which is complete and has been restored. The engine compartment was also restored, and is detailed, if slightly dirty. It runs and works properly, with only some valve lifter noise noted when the engine is cold. The underside is solid and selectively detailed, showing much evidence of work, but it is not detailed for show.
This is an extremely rare and significant car in superb order. It is among the last coach-built Rolls-Royces, and the first with the V8 engine, a variant of which still powers todays flagship Bentleys. The car has also seen a high quality restoration and remains a stunning open air Rolls-Royce.
