General Overview
Although Alfa Romeo remains one of the most respected names in motorsports and performance engineering, up until the early 1950s, Alfa limited their construction to lower volume handcrafted cars generally for elite clientele. All that changed after the second world war when the Giulia and Giulietta entered the market offering performance and style at an attractive price. Both these production-engineered cars were small, sporty, and charming, yet elegantly trimmed, giving an air of sophistication coupled with performance. Sales in Europe and America were robust, establishing Alfa Romeo as a world brand.
History of this Alfa Romeo
According to Marco Fazio, Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazion, and confirmed in the 2012 letter accompanying this car, this Alfa Romeo was originally manufactured October 27, 1961, and delivered to Hoffman Motor Car Company, New York, December 18, 1961. The current and single-family owners purchased the car from the NY dealer and drove it across the country to California where it has remained since new. Remarkably, this car has remained under the care of single-family owners since purchased new. The resultant outcome of singular known ownership over the past 60+ years has resulted in a beautiful combination of original features supported by selective restoration and refinishing only as needed. Throughout ownership, the patron of the family was personally active in the service of this Alfa Romeo. While traveling abroad for professional purposes, he stopped in Italy to purchase an engine rebuild kit from Alfa Romeo. Upon arriving home, he rebuilt the engine himself. Along with maintaining the car personally the car received regular service including oil changes, fluid flushes, and general upkeep. With California ownership since new, the car still wears the original black and gold California license plate issued in 1963 shortly after arrival in Marin County.
Condition Overview
Today this preserved single-family owned Giulietta Spider presents as a handsome example with cosmetics reflecting sensitively combined original and restored elements performed over years of family ownership. The elegant grey paint, applied some years ago, is glossy throughout showing minor stone chips found on the front facing surfaces. The trim is in excellent condition including the grille and twin front openings which are properly fit to the original body. Beautifully finished chrome bumpers and over-riders along with polished aluminum trim accent against the grey finish. The lenses, lighting, and various trim and script are all in excellent condition contributing to the overall cohesive visual presentation. The hood, doors, and trunk exhibit smooth and tight fit, opening and closing with ease, reflective of an unmodified or structurally compromised car. Outfitted with steel wheels finished in correct satin silver and contemporary 185/60 R15 radial tires, a set of Alfa branded polished center caps finishes off this nicely outfitted Giulietta.
The red interior presents as a well resolved combination of original features and refinished areas. The red seats were reupholstered some time ago, but still retain good overall cosmetics, supported by a pair of black seat belts. The matching red door panels, newer matching red carpeting, and black rubber floor mat work in harmony with the overall look and feel of the exterior. The convertible top, which appears very likely original, remains in surprisingly good condition considering the age, displays excellent fit at the windshield and only slight shrink evident when fitting the side snaps. The body-colored dashboard and black padded dash displays handsome original instrumentation displaying a light golden patina as found on rare original cars. The original steering wheel is wrapped with black leather, featuring an ivory painted and chrome horn ring with an Alfa Romeo center emblem. The manual gear selector is centered between an elegant radio blanking plate and original ashtray, both of which add a sporting touch of vintage elegance to the interior. Behind the seats, a matching full sized spare tire is stowed, concealed by a red vinyl cowl drape.
Under the hood, the engine and engine bay have been restored to a very nice level including the correct original air cleaner, satin finished twin cam head, proper green ignition wires, correct hoses and clamps, correct coatings, hardware, and fasteners, many of which appear original to this car. The original quilted hood insulation pad remains in place, proudly displaying light patina from years of service. Among the many original features under the hood, the firewall displays the correct AR*171277* serial number, correct steering box, original carburetor, IPRA, Torino radiator top tank, and an original washer fluid bag. The engine block displays a clean single strike stamping number 0102*27948* which, according to the original family owners, is matching and correct for this car.
Inside the trunk, the body metal is sound and finished in matching grey paint, trimmed with an Alfa Romeo branded rubber trunk mat. A modern Optima battery, installed in 2023, is mounted on the passenger side. The undercarriage is representative of a well-cared for example with sound floor pans, save for a floor repair patch which appears to have been completed some years ago, and more recently applied protective undercoating. The finned engine oil pan and transaxle alloy castings are in excellent condition as are many of the underside finishes, several of which appear original to the car.
This Alfa Romeo is a delight to drive with road manners and handling befitting such a well-preserved example. The engine turns over easily on cold or warm starts and the clutch takes up smoothly in all gears. Acceleration is well matched for suburban roads and comfortable at highway speeds. Handling and braking are consistent for the times, best suited to leisurely jaunts on country roads.
This Alfa is accompanied by the Marco Fazio, Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazion letter, a car cover, a factory jack and tire tool, a small set of tools in a tool roll, an original sales brochure, Giulietta instruction booklet, Giulietta Cars Shop Manual, Giulietta 1300 book, an Autobooks owners workshop manual, and a spare fan belt.
This beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider offers well-sorted mechanicals and known ownership, awaiting the next owner’s delightful engagement. Few cars delight their owners like an Alfa Romeo Guilietta Spider, be it shows, club events, or simply to experience the joy of engaging open-air driving.
