Description

1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spiders/n AR171349, engine no. AR00102 *28071*Red with Black InteriorThe Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With theGiulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic.Essentially the Italian take on the classic sports car formula, the cars coupled lovely bodywork by Pininfarina (on open cars) or Bertone (on closed cars) with Alfa Romeo's sophisticated twin cam engine and a wonderfully lively and entertaining chassis. This particular car has been beautifully restored to the highest standards and is a long time California car that is believed to have just two owners from new. It was originally completed on the 31st of October 1961, and supplied to Hoffman Motor Car Company in New York on the 23rd of November 1961. Its original color was red. Its current owner purchased it in the mid 1970s, and it has been in California since then. It is believed to have been in the San Francisco Bay Area of California for its entire life. The car was completely disassembled and restored in its entirety by highly regarded Alfa Romeo specialist Tom Sahines whose work on Giuliettas has earned him the “Best Tipo 101” award for a Veloce he showed at Concorso Italiano. This car has covered less than 500 miles since its restoration. The car was restored to original specifications with the exception of the fitment of David Rough suspension with Spax shocks, Weber carburetor, upgraded camshafts, and 5-speed transmission. As a result the car is in stunning condition. The body is excellent, with straight panels and great fit throughout. The paintwork was done to high standards and is basically unmarked. The chrome is fresh and has very minor scratches only. The glazing and lights are also fresh and in excellent shape. The attention to detail is excellent, with restore badges and Borrani decals on the wheels. The interior was restored to equally high standards. The upholstery and carpets were correctly redone and are as new, and the correct rubber Alfa Romeo floor mats are in place. The chrome trim is also in excellent shape and most of the switches and controls were restored or replaced as well. The steering wheel is as new other than a hairline crack in the horn button, which is otherwise excellent. The instruments are beautiful and suffer no yellowing or clouding that usually affects the gauges of these cars. The wiring and under dash equipment is equally fresh in appearance. The engine compartment is spotlessly restored and appears very correct with new hood pad, and various correct stenciling such as on the brake fluid reservoir and air filter housing. The inner fenders, firewall, and all hardware were restored and are in show-ready condition. A new windscreen washer fluid bag was fitted as well. The trunk was also restored with fresh paint and correct new rubber floor mat. The top and storage area were also renewed, including spare and spare hardware. This is an excellent driving example, with a tight fresh feel throughout as befits its recent thorough restoration. The driveline is excellent with ample power and good torque from the motor, as well as excellent synchromesh in the gearbox. The brakes and steering box are good and the chassis and suspension operate as they should in a recently and capably restored car. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire what must one of the finest Giulietta Spider Normales in existence. Comprehensively restored by an award-winning marque expert, this car has been thoughtfully upgraded to enhance its usability and performance, although there are no outward signs of any alterations, which provides the best of both worlds. Additionally, the restoration could not be duplicated for the asking price, making this car a sensible purchase for the buyer that seeks perfection. It is also worth noting that Tom Sahines, the restorer of the car, offers a one year post-sale support period to address any sorting that may be necessary.
