Between 1958 and 1962 a total of 27,466 “101” series Alfa Spiders and Sprints were produced. Among these, just 1,366 were the dynamic and highly stylized Sprint Speciale, a spin-off of the radical ‘BAT series’ cars. This fine Sprint Speciale is a long-time California car having enjoyed one long-term owner in California for nearly twenty years. While an Italian delivery car originally, the previous long-term owner had purchased the car from another central California resident in the early 1990s, confirming the was imported fairly early it is life.
As a late, European specification example, this Sprint Speciale is fitted with the smaller and more attractive side marker lights, and gauges in Italian script. It is also fitted with the desirable 5-Speed transmission, which lends itself nicely to higher speed tour and rally driving, as well as freeway cruising among modern traffic.
The subject of a recent and comprehensive, shell-up restoration, upon completion in 2008 this example was awarded “Best of the Marque”, above all other Alfa Romeos in 2008 at the prestigious as well attended Concorso Italiano. This restoration was both mechanical and cosmetic, and included paint, body rubber, chrome, upholstery, transmission and cylinder head rebuilds, underside and engine bay details, and many other smaller tasks. Records on file indication expenditures for carburetor kits, differential seals and bearings, new headliner, carpet, seat, and inner door panel upholstery, wheel cylinder and brake shoes, new fuel (correct yellow) and cooling system hoses, new hubcaps, new emblems, headlights, a rebuilt water pump, transmission bearings, seals, and speedometer drive, and rebuilt shocks. The head was rebuilt with new valves, valve spring retainers, cam followers, and reground cams.
As would be expected of a recently restored, award winning example, this Sprint Speciale makes and exceptional presentation. The body was included in the restoration works. The panel match is excellent throughout, and the paintwork superb. The chrome is also very good, with virtually no age or weathering present. The interior is restored to original specification with vinyl trim in the correct pattern, and the correct carpets. The factory gauges and switchgear remain, and even the window washer bag is present.
The engine bay and undercarriage are both highly detailed, all the way down to the correct factory decals. Correct finishes are applied where appropriate, and the inner fender well and firewall have been repainted when fully stripped.
Included with the car is the Italian license plate, a July 1961 issue of Road and Track containing the Alfa Sprint Speciale road test, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta instruction book, a Glenn’s Alfa Romeo Repair & Tune-up guide, a Giulietta shop manual, and a Giulietta 1300 spare parts catalogue, and records for the current ownership period detailed the extent of the restoration work performed.
While eligible for a growing number of tour and rally events, the highly detailed, comprehensively restored nature of this Giulietta makes it an outstanding candidate for concours showing. With cars of this era appreciating, it is those of limited production, like the Sprint Speciale, which will enjoy the most significant increases in value.
