1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce
s/n ARE159111
Red over Red with Grey Trim
The Giulietta is the car that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, the Giulietta was affordable enough so that many could buy it, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. Though over 100,000 Giuliettas were produced, just 1900 or so examples of the 101 series Sprint Veloce were produced. Thanks to their twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles, performance was much improved over the standard car.
Today, genuine and well cared for Veloces are very rare indeed, and this particular car is a superb example. Purchased by its current owner in the early 1970`s, it has been sympathetically kept and remains an excellent 93,000 mile car from new. At the time the current owner purchased the car, it was being driven by the wife of S. Whitney Griswold, the now legendary supplier of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari automobiles in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shortly before the current owner purchased the car, it was upgraded by Mr.Griswold to include a 1400cc engine and 5-speed transmission. Since then, the car has seen much restorative work, including a high quality repaint in 1990, as well as a complete interior retrim in January of 2008. The quality of the work was very high, and the car was successfully shown several times during the 1980`s (including many first places). Mechanically, the car is excellent and performs wonderfully. The engine and transmission have both been disassembled and renewed as necessary, though they have not required extensive amounts of work thanks to the care and relatively low mileage of this example. The valves were lapped and the piston rings replaced as necessary. Recently, the car has had the suspension carefully and properly set up over a 3 month period by Bob Mello, with new Koni shock absorbers and correct springs to lower the car slightly.
Cosmetically, the car makes an extremely strong impression. The paintwork is high quality and remains in excellent condition. Other than a few chips to the door edges, there are no significant signs imperfections or wear. The panel gaps and fit are satisfactory around the driver`s door, and very good to excellent elsewhere. The panels themselves are extremely straight and free of corrosion. The chrome is excellent, with the exception of the rear bumper, which is showing some minor pitting. The painted wheels show some wear but are on the whole excellent and still very presentable. The Cibiheadlamps and other lights and lenses are excellent. Much of the rubber weather stripping has been replaced, though the tires are old Pirelli Cinturato`s that are showing some age.
The interior is in excellent condition. The seats and door panels were reupholstered in the lovely period red and grey combination, and the workmanship is excellent. The carpets have also been redone at some point and are very nice. The dashboard is excellent, with nice trim, switches, instruments, and the more attractive early style instruments, which show minimal fading. The headliner is also excellent, as is most trim, though there is an area of peeling chrome on the right door release handle.
The engine compartment is highly detailed and extremely clean. The correct and frequently missing Veloce cast air intake plenum is present in this car, and the corresponding inner fender aperture is present to confirm that this is a genuine Veloce. The trunk is unrestored but presentable and extremely solid. The underside is also extremely solid, showing no signs of collision damage or corrosion repair ever.
The car drives and performs wonderfully. The car feels extremely tight and solid, both in terms of suspension and the driveline. The engine is responsive and with the increased displacement, is even more rapid than a standard Veloce.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire and extraordinarily solid and unmolested example of these charming and rare cars. Despite the fact that their values are still fairly affordable, they cars have a fundamental appeal that makes them popular even among very serious collectors. They drive wonderfully, are aesthetically pleasing, and technically interesting, so that frequently, they will share garage space with some of the most desirable collector cars in the world (and frequently a few other variants of the Giulietta line as well!). Having been in Northern California`s mild climate for the vast majority of its life, this particular example is wonderfully solid and straight. The attention to detail devoted to the care and restoration of this car ensures that it is, both mechanically and cosmetically, one of the finest examples we have seen in a very long time, as well as one of the finest examples currently available. Some records are included, as are the original tools.
