Introduced in March of 1961, the Austin Healey 3000 MKII brought fourth many new features to the already excellent MKI. While 11,564 were produced only 355 would be offered in the very rare BN7 Format. With only two seats and three SU Carburetors, the formula for a real sports car was again offered from the Abingdon Manufacturer. Only for a short time however, as the BJ7 emerged and soon after the BJ8 took over until late 1967. The BN7 can be considered the last of the two place Big Healeys, and the most collectible. Offering the pedigree of the early cars in two place format, with the big power of the MK Cars, it is the ultimate Healey in many ways.

The BN7 on offer here was completed February 9th, 1962, and dispatched to its Los Angeles, CA dealer on February 20th 1962. Ordered with every option upon new, as an Ivory White over Black example, this BN7 still retains its factory livery. After its first CA owner took possession in 1962, our records do not show exact ownership history until 1976. At which point the car was purchased by a Robert Foley of Portsmouth, NH. Service receipts indicate only minor tune-up related parts and minor upkeep was performed during Roberts ownership, leading us to believe this car remained very original at this time. In the mid 1990’s the car was purchased by a Tom Hand, also from NH.

In 1997 a thorough restoration was started showing 74,623 miles on the clock. With nearly $22,000 in receipts (present with the car), this Healey was very well tended to by McLean Enterprises of Rye, NH. Virtually every mechanical and cosmetic aspect was tended to, and when finished in 1998, the car reflected a very impressive example completed to very high standards at that time.

In 2005 this BN7 was traded to its next enthusiast caretaker. George Hargrave, a known Healey Collector purchased this BN7 with just over 76,000 miles showing on the odometer. Soon after George commissioned a full servicing, at which point Automotive Specialties of Dallas, TX completed a thorough sorting and updating after 2,500 miles of enjoyment, post-restoration. At this time nearly $5,000 worth of work was completed to bring the car very up to date. George enjoyed the car thoroughly, driving it often and putting nearly 500 miles on it per year.

As a very well kept car for its entire life, it is no surprise that this BN7 reflects a very straight and solid car. While the restoration has aged nicely to that of a well performing driver, the paint still shows well, bright work glistening, and all mechanical items in perfect working order. The interior presents very well, the engine bay correct, and the trunk tidy with the correct spare where it should be, in place of the rear seats. Finished with chrome wires and newer tires, this BN7 has always been well serviced and kept by enthusiast owners and never a neglected example.

Cosmetically we have noticed minor blemishes from average use, a scratch here or a chip there, but nothing in need of attention, and all very minor. The interior shows signs of use, but can best be described as having some patina since the restoration was completed; very much in order with everything in the cockpit in working order. The panel fitment overall is acceptable for a Healey but not 100% perfect. The glass is in good condition with no cracks, chips or fading, and the rubber components throughout the car are excellent as well. Clean door jams, interior, and trunk show evidence of use but in no need of attention.

Mechanically this car starts instantly, idles nicely, and has smooth power throughout the range without issues of any kind. The transmission was more recently rebuilt during the major Service that took place in 2005 and is flawless with the overdrive working every time. Oil pressure always shows 45 pounds at idle and 60 under load. Temperature would be hard pressed to see above 190 on a warm day and is always consistent. The brakes, clutch, and steering are all as they should be with no blemishes noted. The engine bay is tidy, very correct right down to the clamps with everything in order. The present owners have had the pleasure of driving this example over 200 mile so far, taking it to various local events, and can report it to be a fantastic drivers car with flawless performance.

In summation, this is a very rare opportunity to own a true two place example of the Tri-Carb (BN7) Austin Healey. Complete with spare, hardtop, all weather gear, manual, all restoration records, and service records. This example has been 100% verified by both the BHT and the BN7 registry as an original, numbers matching, true 2-place tri-carb example, with all supporting documentation included in the sale. As the second lowest production Healey every produced (next to the 100S), this is a prime collector grade specimen and a very sensible investment.
