Description

1962 Jaguar E-Type Coupe
s/n 885841, engine no. R4524-9
Opalescent Dark Green with Biscuit Leather Interior

The E-Type was unveiled in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, following the famous 11th hour disorder (one of the cars was driven to the show from England with just hours to spare). The car was an immediate sensation: its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons` values beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar’s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar’s legendary twin cam inline-6. The cars were continuously developed, however, the arrival of American safety legislation and the twelve cylinder engine made later cars less attractive and less sporting, making the series I cars the pick of the bunch.

This particular car is a 43,000 mile example that has been in the same family since new, having been ordered on the 24th of January, 1962 at Mooers Motor Car Company in Richmond, Virginia. The original invoice is included with the car, specifying a first color choice of Opalescent Dark Green with Biscuit interior and a second color choice of Opalescent Dark Green with Suede Green interior. The original invoice shows the options of radio for $106 and chrome wire wheels for $120, plus an additional $48 for delivery in the United Kingdom, for a total cash price of $4669.00. The first owner took delivery of the car on the 2nd of April 1962 with the UK registration number 1062 WK (which the owner understands to signify \"Works\" for a car registered at the Jaguar factory in Coventry), and toured with the car before shipping it back to the United States on the 11th of May 1962 at a cost of $519.20 aboard the S/S American Banker. The car comes with a wealth of original documents from this period including the purchase order, car invoice, shipping documents, purchase tax indemnity form, Jaguar Cars Limited duty exemption information sheet on company letterhead, original tax disc, and various other shipping and importation documents. The car also comes with an original May of 1961 issue of Road & Track, which featured the E-Type on the cover.

The car was used sparingly and always garaged its entire life. Significant restorative work was performed from 2002 to 2008, including a full cosmetic restoration and significant mechanical work as well. This included a bare metal resparay in the car’s original color on its original rust free body, a complete new interior, new clutch, throwout bearing, and balanced flywheel, rebuilt hydraulic system and brakes, much suspension work, engine compartment detailing and restoration, and rebuilt carburetors. Countless other items were addressed, including all body seals and weather stripping, new fuel pump, new suspension bushings (including polyurethane steering rack mounts and front suspension bushings), near rear subframe bushings, new motor mounts, rebuilt speedometer, rebuilt brake servo, new master cylinder, new clutch master and slave cylinders, new wheel cylinders, rebuilt generator, jet hot coated exhaust manifolds, new wheels with stainless steel spokes, new radiator surge tank, new radiator cap, new voltage regulator, new ignition coil and various senders, new spark plug wires, new fuel tank, new brake pads, new brake lines and many other items.

The car is complete with original workshop manual, original UK plates, original tool roll, tools, and jack, as well as Heritage Certificate confirming the car as a one-owner example. There is also extensive documentation from the car’s early life, as well as a thick file of invoices from the restoration and a can of touch up paint.

The car presents strongly with an exceptionally nice body that is very straight and displays nice panel fit. The paint is shiny and fresh in appearance and was done to nice driver level standards, with a few minor imperfections but impressive presence overall. The lights and lenses are excellent throughout and the front windscreen appears to be original, with light marks but minimal wear overall, supporting the low accumulated mileage. The chrome trim is intact and in good shape, although there is light pitting on the side mirrors and front bumper and some very minor surface scratches on the rear bumpers and tail light trims. The window trims are excellent.

The interior is excellent, having been thoroughly restored. The upholstery, carpets, headliner, and dashboard are all excellent. Nearly every aspect of the interior was redone, including the dashboard and center console. The correct Jaguar rubber floor mats are in place over the carpets. The car is currently fitted with a small diameter steering wheel that mimics the styling and construction of the original, which provides more legroom while maintaining the aesthetic of the interior. The original steering wheel is included. The headliner was replaced with a new correct wool one and the load space was included in the restoration and presents essentially as new.

The engine is clean and correct in appearance, but not detailed to show standards. The correct finishes are in place on the valve covers, cylinder head, airbox and throughout most of the engine compartment. The front subframe and inside of the bonne appear never to have been restored.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an E-Type coupe with superb provenance. A one owner car with abundant early documentation, this car has been restored in its original color combination and is a matching numbers car that has covered just 43,000 miles from new. It is exceptionally complete with documentation, original workshop manual, tool roll, tools, jack, Heritage Certificate, and a can of touchup paint.
