Thanks to their pedigreed racing histories and innovative and unconventional technical features, few cars captivate the motoring world as Lancias do. Zagato coachbuilders are responsible for the dramatic and masculine styling of the Aston Martin DB4GTZ, Fiat 8V Zagato, and Maserati A6G 2000 and many other cars of the era that now command into the millions of dollars. Zagato bodies tend to be made entirely of alloy and are thus much lighter than those bodies designed by Pinnin Farina and Bertone. This, together with their “swoopy” aerodynamic traits, made Zagato bodies an obvious choice for competition use. Indeed, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Fiat, Lancia, and Maserati all commissioned Zagato to build bodies for their racecars of the era. Because of their alloy construction, Zagato bodies were expensive, and were therefore rare, even when new. Lancias also tended to be quite rare because of the high prices that their advanced technology commanded. Thus, a Lancia with a “double bubble” body by Zagato is an extremely rare find, and today, they have finally become the sought after and valuable cars they deserve to be.
At the time, the Flaminia was the flagship of the Lancia line, and incorporated numerous sophisticated features, including an aluminum V6 and transaxle with inboard disc brakes for excellent weight distribution and low unsprung weight. While the sedan and PF coupes were more lushly furnished, the Zagato was the most sporting version of Lancia’s top-of-the-line model. This particular Flaminia bodied by Zagato was built in 1962 and was fitted at the factory with the desirable triple carburetor set up known as “3C”, has the 2.5L engine used during the bulk of the production run. Further, it has had the most desirable covered headlight nose section retroactively fitted. In total, less than 600 Zagato bodied Flaminias were built during the three production series, but contrary to popular belief, a covered headlight car with triple carburetors was never produced by Lanica in period!
This particular example was restored and rebuilt in late 1990s by Lancia specialist Franco De Piero in Italy. With the adaptation of covered headlights, this example has been transformed to harness all the most desirable features identified by enthusiasts during the Flaminia Zagato production cycle. It is a desirable 2nd Series, 3-carb 2.5L example, now equipped with a 1st Series covered lamp nose section copied from an original example also under restoration with Mr. di Perio at the time this car was in-process.
Today the car is best described as mechanically very well sorted, with excellent rally event ready cosmetics. It is extremely solid structurally, an important and often lacking feature with unibody Lanicas. Under the previous ownership period this Zagato has proven itself as a successful Copperstate 1000 participant, and has been in the care of Fantasy Junction for nearly 20 years.
The paintwork is of very high quality over straight panels, with good gaps and shut lines. A handsome shade of grey-green, and a very fine flake metallic, the finish is well suited to the flowing Zagato coachwork. There are some blemishes in terms of aging and use marks, mostly on the forward facing panels, but there are also a handful of minor imperfections around the car. The brightwork is straight, and in good condition, but not absolutely fresh in its presentation. The car sits in Michelin X series tires, and standard steel wheels with beautiful stainless Lancia wheel covers.
The interior is also trimmed in an attractive shade of grey well suited to the car’s era. The leather is of high quality, and stitched in the original pattern. The instrumentation and switchgear are original units, and wool carpets have been used. While the interior is not as-new in condition, it has a light and charming patina, inviting use and enjoyment.
The engine bay and underside and both very correct in their equipment, details, and finishes, and are clearly the product of a comprehensive restoration. The underside is very solid, and is without evidence of previous rust or damage repairs.
While aesthetics are certainly in its favor, it is the driving experience which makes this particular Flaminia Zagato so special. It starts easily, even out of long term storage, and produces excellent power and a crisp exhaust note. The brakes, steering and suspension are all well-adjusted, operating with the high quality feel that has made Lancia so famous. The transaxle provides a smooth and confidence inspiring gear change experience, although 2nd gear synchro has some very minor wear evident when shifting quickly. This example is free from the troublesome Lancia driveline vibration common to many cars. It is an ideal example for long distance tours, and will provide its next custodian with many miles of enjoyment. These cars can be difficult to get sorted, and knowledgeable mechanics with Lanica experience can be few and far between. Thus, a truly expertly restored example which runs and drives as Lancia intended- a smooth, high quality, well balanced feel- typical of their engineering masterpieces, is an opportunity which should not be missed.
Offered with the tool roll, jack, spare tire, and reprinted owner’s manual, this beautifully restored example, combining the most desirable attributes of the Flaminia Zagato models is sure to be a highlight addition to any Italian car enthusiast collector, whether it be for investment or driving pleasure.
