1962 Lotus 22 Formula Junior
s/n 22-J-19
British Racing Green with Red interior
This report is based upon an inspection of the car and its associated documentation made at the premises of the then owner, David Stevenson. Full access to the car and associated spares was given and a number of photographs of the car and the spares were taken, some of which will be used to illustrate this report.
The car was delivered to its first owner, Malcolm Templeton of Northern Ireland in April 1962. The car was used extensively in Formula Junior events in the UK and in Formula Libre events in Ireland. There is then a large gap in the car’s history and it next is noted as in the possession of Jonathan Bradburne, a dealer of the period, in 1985. Some restoration work was done on the car by Peter Denty, a well known and respected restorer of Lotuses, and the car was then sold to Chris Ball in 1986. Chris Ball took the car to the USA and competed in it in the American Historic Formula Junior Series; winning the championship in 1987.
Chris Ball returned to the UK in 1992 and brought the car with him and used it in British and European Formula Junior events. The car was acquired by George Dudley in 1998 and was driven in domestic events by his son. The present owner acquired the car in 2002 and has used it in the Lurani series and in British National Formula Junior events.
The car is identified by a chassis plate mounted on the dashboard, which is believed to be original and is illustrated below. The car currently has a Historic Vehicle Identity Form No. 92/1142, which will expire at the end of 2006. An Historic Technical Passport will then be required for the car if it is to be used in European events. This can be obtained from ACCUS FIA.
An inspection of the car was made with the car fully assembled and with the body panels removed. The chassis frame was examined and compared with a contemporary drawing of the model published in “Car & Driver” in period. A copy of this drawing is reproduced on Page 3 of this report.
The car’s dimensions are close to the original specification. The original front track measurement was 50.5”; it currently measures 52”. The original rear track measurement was 51” and this dimension is retained. The car is fitted with a separate radiator and oil cooler - the original was a combined unit.
Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history of its competition life since the late eighties. The set up information used by Chris Ball during his use of it in the American FJ Championship in 1987.
The Geoff Richardson engine is well documented with information about plumbing the lubrication system and details of the electronic ignition. There are also comprehensive servicing details of the engine.
There are receipts for work done by restorers Peter Denty, for Chris Ball and Tony Thompson, for George Dudley, and there are some notes of test sessions of the car by Tony Thompson. Both Peter Denty and Tony Thompson are well known in Lotus circles in Europe. The car would appear to be a good example of a customer Lotus 22.
