1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SE Sunroof Coupe
s/n 11202112001877
Black with Red Leather Interior
Introduced in 1961, the W112 generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class replaced the famed `Adenauer` cars and was the absolute top of the line car. They incorporated a number of advanced technical and convenience features including sophisticated hydropneumatic adjustable suspension and fuel injection. In pillarless coupe form they are particularly elegant, and this example`s appeal is further enhanced by the fitment air conditioning and a sunroof, features that appeared on less than ten percent of the approximately 2200 cars made.
This car has been owned by its current owner since 1989 and comes with an imposing folder of receipts and documents associated with the car`s maintenance since then. The owner bought the car in the Midwest and brought it with him when he moved to Northern California in the early 1990`s. The car was cosmetically restored between 1992 and 1996, with the total for the bodywork reaching approximately $15,000. Since then has seen much mechanical work as well, including a completely rebuilt engine and radiator, as well as a rebuilt transmission and torque converter. All work has been performed by well-regarded specialists within the last 5,000 miles at a cost of nearly $11,000.
As a result, the car is in extremely good usable condition. The general cosmetic impression is very strong. The paintwork was a top notch job and remains excellent and almost completely free of blemishes. The chrome is generally presentable but shows light pitting and hazing, except on the bumpers, where it is excellent. The rubber around the windows is showing its age, but the glass is excellent. The lights and lenses are generally excellent including the desirable Cibi except for the rear lenses, which are exhibiting some minor cracking.
The interior is similarly nice. The leather was redone fairly recently, including the correct perforated inserts, and remains in very good condition with light wear only. The carpets are faded but intact and their replacement would enhance the feel of the interior tremendously. The wood is generally very good, except around the windscreen where it is expiring. The headliner sags a bit behind the sunroof but is otherwise intact. The chrome is good and there is a Blaupunkt radio fitted. The clock is not operational and the steering wheel has cracks where the spokes meet the rim.
The engine compartment and trunk are both unrestored but remain presentable and clean. The jack is present in the trunk as is the original rubber mat. The air conditioning equipment is all present but the belt for the compressor is not fitted.
The driving position is commanding and the view evocative with the shapely fenders and three-pointed star. The car drives very nicely and it has clearly had a great deal of money spent on the drivetrain. The car comes with the original manual, car cover, and the formidable service file.
This is a ready to enjoy car that is a beautiful evocation of a different era when cars were built with a completely different mindset from today`s. The quality of the hardware and detailing in this car reflect its high initial price, which would have been slightly more than that of a 300SL Roadster. For considerably less than a 300SL roadster today, however, this car`s lovely color, condition, rarity, build quality, and engineering features make it a very appealing car.
