1962 Porsche 356B Cabriolet
s/n 157264
Red with Black Interior
Introduced to replace the 356A in 1959, the 356B brought new levels of civilization and refinement to Porsche’s increasingly popular and capable sports car line. While the A and C models of the 356 have traditionally attracted the most attention from mainstream collectors, the 356 B is an underappreciated avenue into classic Porsche ownership. As always, the cars incorporated thoughtful and functional design, along with the tried and true Porsche dogmas of high quality, value, reliability, and mechanical robustness.
This particular was sold new in California, and has been the subject of a restoration which included the paint, body, chrome, engine bay, front storage area, top canvas and frame, gauges, and many other items. Currently the car is best described as a nice driver example, which runs and drives exceedingly well.
The repaint was a high quality job, over reasonably straight panels. The car was red in color prior to the restoration. As is so often the case with the 356 series cars, significant corrosion repairs were required at the time of restoration. The panel match is generally very good, with the exception of the lower half of the passenger’s door. The floors appear to be original, but there have been are several patches made over the years. There is additional corrosion present in a part of the floorboard, although this does not impede the use of the car at this time. The chrome is generally very nice, with minimal weathering. Much of the glass, and lenses were replaced as part of the restoration, and are very nice accordingly. The upholstery was redone, with the seats in vinyl, and the carpets in the correct tweed material accompanied by the correct rubber mats. The car sits on nice chrome wheels with newer Michelin XZX tires.
The engine in this car was rebuilt by The (late) Maestro in San Jose, California, and is an astonishingly strong performer accordingly. In recent months, the brake hydraulic system was serviced as needed. The transmission, brakes, suspension, and steering are all performing well at this time. The engine bay is nicely detailed, with much of the correct equipment in place, including the correct oil filter and air filter housings. This example is badged as a Super.
Included with the sale of this car is the unrestored but compete hard top, the original (not installed) tools, spare wheel and tire, owner’s manual, workshop manuals, several other 356 specific books, in addition to a photo essay of the restoration work.
This example will appeal to enthusiast looking to drive his vintage Porsche, who does not wish to pay a premium for a show-level restoration.
