Among Porsche enthusiasts, there is a never ending debate about which model is the ultimate open 356. The Speedster has long been regarded as the most collectible, and does enjoy a certain purity of line that is very attractive, however the later Convertible D and B Roadster enjoy functional and mechanical updates that make the cars more pleasurable to use in the real world. Thus, enthusiasts wishing to enjoy their cars will be attracted to the 356B Roadster, whose low and rakish lines, more functional top and wind up windows represent the perfect compromise between the unmistakably sporty lines first embodied by the Speedster and the civilized refinement of the Cabriolet. Coupled with the mechanical updates on all 356B’s (including more substantial oil pump, more effective bumpers, improved ZF gearboxes and shift linkages, improved brakes, and stronger connecting rods).
This car is a lovely example that is believed to have been in California since new. The current owner purchased the car at Lukes and Shorman about forty years ago, and the car has remained in the San Francisco Bay Area under the same owner’s care since. He has spent much money over the years, fastidiously maintaining the car at Lukes and Shorman until they retired, and has been looked after by The Stable since. Additionally, the car had a cosmetic restoration in 1997 at a cost of approximately $28,000 to include complete stripping of the paint and renewal, restoration of the chrome, new windscreen, rubber, interior, and top. In recent years, the car has also had a transmission rebuild, new clutch, new shocks, front suspension rebuild, brake job, generator, and numerous tune-ups and valve adjustments. The current owner purchased a Certificate of Authenticity in 1997, which revealed to him that the car is still in its original colors, and that the engine had been replaced at some point before he purchased the car with a 1960 356B motor.
The car is in lovely condition today, and the cosmetics are still extremely fresh. The bodywork was done to high standards and still shows beautifully. The panels are straight, and the fit and gaps excellent. The paintwork is very nice, with almost no blemishes, just a handful of small chips from road use. The chrome is excellent throughout, as are the wheels and trim. The glass and lights are excellent as well.
The interior is also excellent, with high quality upholstery and carpeting throughout. The dashboard, door panels, and seats were all redone, as was all the carpeting. The dashboard was repainted and is excellent, as are the instruments. A few switches, knobs, and the steering wheel were not restored and are very good considering this. The car has a full tonneau cover as well new top, both of which are excellent.
The engine compartment is clean but has never been restored and is showing age in some areas such as the fan shroud. There is much evidence of recent maintenance including new ignition components. The trunk is also unrestored and is very solid and complete with jack, spare, and some tools.
This is a great opportunity to acquire a lovely Roadster that has been in California for most if not all of its life. Cosmetically, it is extremely attractive, and it also runs and drives very well. It shows no corrosion, and has been lovingly owned and looked after by its enthusiastic owner. The car has a nice honest feel that is rare to find, and comes with service records and owner’s manual.
