Description

1962 Porsche 356B T6 “Twin Grille” Roadsters/n 89832, Engine no. 607258Bali Blue with Grey Leather InteriorAmong Porsche enthusiasts, there is a never ending debate about which model is the ultimate open 356. The Speedster has long been regarded as the most collectible, and does enjoy a certain purity of line that is very attractive, however the later Convertible D and B Roadster enjoy functional and mechanical updates that make the cars more pleasurable to use in the real world. Thus, enthusiasts wishing to enjoy their cars will be attracted to the 356B Roadster, whose low and rakish lines, lined top and wind up windows represent the perfect compromise between the unmistakably sporty lines first embodied by the Speedster and the civilized refinement of the Cabriolet. Coupled with the mechanical updates on all 356B’s (including more substantial oil pump, more effective bumpers, improved ZF gearboxes and shift linkages, improved brakes, and stronger connecting rods). Produced from 1959 until 1962, the pick of the 356B Roadster line is the last of the line cars with twin cooling grilles in the engine lid, and the squared off trunk opening that defines the T6 body. Just 249 examples of the twin grill roadster were built, making them extremely rare and collectible. This particular car is a matching-numbers per its Certificate of Authenticity that was restored to extremely high standards in 1989-1990. It has been carefully stored and used sparingly since and remains in excellent order. It was sold new in the United States and its current owner is a fastidious Southern California Porsche collector. The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical, including a “Maestro-massaged” engine of approximately 95hp built by HCP Research. The bodywork was performed to high standards and the car is structurally exemplary at this time, including the floors and battery box.The car is in excellent cosmetic condition, and has the appearance of a much more recent restoration. The paintwork and bodywork are superb, with excellent fit and gaps. There are very few minor signs of use, only a handful of small chips on the front of the car, which are visible only on close inspection. The chrome is very good across the board, including the hub caps. The wheels are excellent as is the glass. The car has Cibié headlamps and Hella 128 fog lamps, and all lights and lenses are excellent, save for a small crack in the left rear tail light lens. The interior of the car is equally impressive. The leather upholstery on the seats is like new, and the door panels were upholstered to high standards and show little evidence of wear or age. The carpets are excellent correct square weave, and have smart blue edging coordinated with the exterior paintwork of the car. The instruments and switches are excellent, and the car has a vintage Blaupunkt radio fitted as well. The steering wheel is excellent, and a new horn button has just been fitted. The car has a lovely dark blue canvas top, as well as a dark blue canvas full tonneau cover. The engine compartment is extremely clean and quite correct as well. The correct decals are in place on this matching-numbers unit, and the car has the original Knecht air filter assemblies. The engine compartment is detailed throughout. The trunk is very nice as well, with restored spare and leather strap to hold it in place. The correct plastic liner tray is also in place, as is the labeled fuse box cover. The underside is very tidy and solid throughout. The floor stampings are crisp and the engine is quite dry. This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a desirable twin grille Roadster. Truly a case of the last and best, this car is presents as an extremely attractive but usable example that has had its original engine upgraded to provide improved performance. It is presented in a striking period Porsche color combination, and also includes records from the restoration, as well as tool roll with tools. Overshadowed for years by the Speedster, the 356B Roadster is finally emerging from years of underappreciation, and this example is sure to appeal to the enthusiast who appreciates the quality of the execution of this particular car.
