Italian automaker Alfa Romeo gained fame in the early 1930’s for their line of twin-cam, straight six powered Grand Touring cars. Following World War II, the company became known mostly for their lightweight, small displacement four cylinder cars. The 2600 Sprint marked a return to building the powerful and luxurious “6C” Gran Turismo cars that made the company famous.

The engine was a direct derivative of the twin cam of old, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp.The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too, and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the Sprints were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

The Bertone-built Sprint body, first penned in 1959 as the 2000 Sprint, marked the first-ever design to meet production from a young Giorgetto Giugiaro and influenced a generation of European sporting coupes. The design proved so innovative that Bertone essentially resold it three times- as the Gordon-Keeble, the Iso Rivolta and the BMW 3200 CS- (though the original remains the purest incarnation)- and inspired a downscale version-the Giulia GT- that was beloved by a generation of Alfisti.

Total production of the model was 6,402 built between 1962 and 1966. Noted Alfa Romeo historian and author Pat Braden wrote about the 2600 Sprint in his book, “The Alfa Romeo Owner’s Bible”, calling it “A true grand touring car...capable of covering long distances reliably without tiring driver or passenger” and saying “If you simply must have a classic 6-cylinder Alfa, this is probably the model to buy…the 2600 is the most bulletproof Alfa of all time, according to an Alfa engineer who knows such things…” Today, Sprints are rare and are welcome additions to any gathering of 6C 2500 Alfas, as they represent the last of the great 6C Gran Turismo lineage.


This 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Coupe represents the finest example of its type in North America. It features a 2.6 liter all-alloy DOHC Inline 6 with triple Solex sidedraft carbs and 5 speed manual transmission, power windows and power assisted disc brakes. The car is show in a subtle off-white exterior with restored black leather interior. Shown at Meadowbrook 2007, won Best of Class at Masterpiece 2007, judged 95.9/100 points at Alfa Romeo Owners Club National Concours, 2007. Won Best of Class at 2008 Alfa Romeo Owners Club of America National Concours. Alfa Romeo Owner's Club Certificato D'Oro Certification-the only Alfa 2600 Sprint in America to be awarded this honor. The only variations from stock are easily reversible, and include an upgraded radio, seat belts and rear trunk carpeting in place of rubber mats. The car includes an incredibly original and complete toolbox.

The car was shown at the 2010 Masterpiece Concours alongside the Pebble Beach winning 6c2500s of Corrado Lopresto, where it placed in its class. It also participated in a photoshoot of Bertone-bodied cars for Lilli Bertone, wife of Nuccio Bertone and President of the Bertone design studio in Italy.

It represents a fractional investment to those of its contemporaries- the Alfa 6c and 1900 models- yet is imminently more modern and usable.

The car was owned for many years by a retired NASA engineer and Bay Area Alfa Club (ARA) member who lovingly restored and enthusiastically utilized the car. It was driven from San Jose to a number of annual National Alfa Club Meets throughout the Midwest in the 1990’s. It was then sold to the President of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Wisconsin in early 2003, who preserved and displayed the car throughout the Midwest, driving it on many club touring events. The most recent was a 300 mile Fall Color tour this past September where the car performed flawlessly.

The car remains one of the most photographed examples of this model on the web. Any Google search of “Alfa Romeo 2600” brings up multiple photos of this very car at events throughout its lifetime.
