Description

1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring
s/n AR*192979* Eng. No. AR00601 *06732*
White with Red Interior

Alfa Romeo gained fame in the early 1930’s for their line of twin-cam, straight six powered Grand Touring cars. Following World War II, the company became known mostly for their light weight, smaller displacement four cylinder cars, however, the 2600 marked a return to Alfa’s earlier approach of elegant “6C” Gran Turismo cars.

The engine was a direct derivative of the previous twin cam six, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp.The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too, and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the Sprints were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

More well appointed than the Giulietta and the Guilia Spiders, the 2600 Spider by Touring was a refined performance touring car equipped for comfort. Better suited for long distance touring events, with their larger displacement, wider torque band, standard 5 speed transmission, and larger carrying capacity, the 2600 Spider is popular among driving enthusiasts who expect to travel hundreds of miles over several days, and arrive in comfort.

This particular car, as a very late-production example, is distinguished by its front and rear disc brakes and other minor improvements made towards the end of the production cycle. This car has been fitted with Weber carburetors, which were an option when new, and are more desirable, serviceable, and produce more horsepower than the Solexes that were originally fitted. The original Solex carburetors are included with this car.

The car has been lovingly kept by the same owner in California since 1979 and its indicated mileage of 75,000 is believed to be from new. The car even has its “pink slip” issued in 1979, from the days when California titles were actually pink in color. The car has had much recent work including a complete repaint two years ago, new Michelin X 165 by 400 tires, and a cylinder head rebuild. The car has a file of records from the last two decades, as well as owner’s manual, shop manual, and complete tool set. The car is in very nice condition, having been judged as the “Best Alfa Romeo” at the 2012 Concorso Italiano.

Cosmetically, the car is in excellent driver condition. The paintwork is in excellent shape throughout, with virtually no wear since the renewal of the paint. The panels fit well and are solid. The chrome varies from good to excellent, with minor pitting in some areas such as the driver’s door handle and windscreen frame. The bumpers are excellent. The glass and lights are excellent throughout.

The interior is partially original and is well-preserved. The upholstery is in good physical condition although the color varies depending on which parts have been replaced and which are original. The dashboard is complete and in fine shape, including all switches and instruments. The instruments have yellowed somewhat, as is common on Alfas of the period. A modern radio with CD player has been discreetly fitted beneath the dash.\\

The engine compartment is very clean and tidy, and is generally correct in appearance. The often-missing factory intake system is in place, as is the VDO washer bag. The trunk is also quite correct, with original matting and complete factory tool set with tools.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a very fine example of Alfa Romeo’s often underappreciated six cylinder grand tourer. The car has all the ingredients of a legendary classic motoring experience, including twin cam engine, Weber carburetors, coachbuilt open bodywork, 5-speed transmission, and disc brakes all around. Additionally, this particular example runs and drives superbly, making it an ideal car for touring and events. Additionally, with its longtime California ownership history, completeness, and condition, this car is an ideal example for a collector seeing a high caliber example.
