The E-Type was unveiled in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, following the famous 11th hour disorder (one of the cars was driven to the show from England with just hours to spare). The car was an immediate sensation: its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons` values beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar`s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar`s legendary twin cam inline-6. The cars were continuously developed, however, the arrival of American safety legislation and the twelve cylinder engine made later cars less attractive and less sporting, making the series I cars the pick of the bunch.

This particular example is a Series I 3.8 liter OTS (open two-seater), comprehensively restored to the highest standards in 2007-2008. The restoration was a complete rotisserie job encompassing all systems and components, and was performed by renowned Jaguar specialist David Ferguson of Images Auto Body in Campbell, California. During the restoration, there was great attention to detail regarding every aspect of this car. Several mechanical upgrades were performed, including fitting a 5-speed transmission, electronic distributor, an aluminum radiator with multi-blade cooling fan, more aggressive camshafts, Wilwood brakes, and gear reduction starter. In addition, the drive train has been completely rebuilt. These upgrades are subtle but provide significant functional improvements to make the car more enjoyable. The 5-speed has a satisfying gated action, while the cams make the car rev enthusiastically where the original engine would have felt breathless. Also worth noting is that this car has extremely rare period optional aluminum Borrani wire wheels with the proper Borrani knockoffs. During the restoration, the original hardware was properly plated with cadmium as appropriate. The chrome was triple plated and the suspension powder coated. The brake cylinders are brass-lined, and new wiring was also fitted. The engine and undercarriage were fully detailed, and the body stripped completely before being refinished using Glasurit paint. The carpets are wilton wool, and the top and boot are mohair.

Consequently, the car is in stunning condition. The paint work is extremely high quality, and the level of craftsmanship evident in the bodywork is impressive. The panels are extremely straight and operate exactly as they should, including the bonnet, a difficult and unusual feat for an E-Type. The chrome is excellent as well, and the Borrani wire wheels are stunning. The glass and lamps are in superb shape as well.

The interior is equally impressive and looks very smart with its contrasting grey piping. As noted on the car’s Heritage Certificate, the contrasting grey piping and black interior and exterior are all the original colors of the car. The leather is wonderfully supple and like new, and the workmanship excellent throughout. The correct materials have been used elsewhere in the interior, and the carpets are equally well done. The steering wheel is a smaller diameter wood-rimmed dished Nardi unit, and the original unrestored wheel is included with the car. The shift knob is very similar to the original but bears the shift pattern of the 5-speed gearbox, a subtle indication of the mechanical updates. The switches, instruments and trim have all been restored and are also excellent. The top was included in the restoration, again using the highest quality materials, and the frame has been correctly restored in light green.

The engine compartment has been stunningly detailed, and is extremely clean. It is in show condition throughout, and very correct in terms of finishes and appearance, save for the aluminum radiator. All hardware has been beautifully restored or replaced as well. The trunk is also very nice, employing the correct upholstery and includes spare wire wheel, jack, and tools.

This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a Series I E-Type Roadster of the highest caliber. This car has been restored in a no-expense spared fashion with the addition of subtle but worthwhile mechanical upgrades. The car preserves a largely stock appearance and is extremely fresh in appearance, while its original color combination and matching numbers make this car a potential candidate for showing. It is also highly complete, with tools, jack, spare, heritage certificate and extensive photographic documentation of the restoration. The car also comes with its original gearbox, seat sliders (the car has lower ones to provide more space installed right now), and steering wheel.
