1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupe
s/n LSCX309
Black with Black Leather Interior
The Silver Cloud, which replaced the R-type and Silver Dawn models, made its predecessor look decidedly old-fashioned, and represented the last of the separate-frame Rolls-Royces. The earliest cars were powered by a development of the large six-cylinder engine from the earlier cars, but the introduction of the Silver Cloud II in 1959 saw the introduction of their all-new 6.2 litre aluminum alloy V8, and further refinements resulted in the Silver Cloud III, the ultimate version of the Silver Cloud. Power steering and power brakes were standard, as was a four-speed automatic transmission. As the last of the separate frame cars, the Silver Cloud was also the last of the cars that could be fitted with custom coach-built bodies. This is one such car, with drophead coupe bodywork by H.J. Mulliner. Since the factory did not offer an open version of the ‘standard steel’ saloon, customers seeking open cars were obliged to contact a coachbuilder to fulfill that request. Purportedly, of the 328 coachbuilt Silver Cloud III’s built, just 27 of them were left hand drive H.J. Mulliner Drophead Coupes.
This particular car was originally delivered in Germany and was brought to the United States when it was a few years old. It is an original left hand drive example and is equipped with air conditioning. The car belonged the same American collector for many years, before being acquired by the current owner via Vantage Motorworks in Florida. The car passed through the hands of Nicholas Cage for a few years, before being reacquired by its current owner. In recent years, the car has seen some cosmetic work, but is a substantially original car on the whole and is in outstanding order. The paintwork was renewed to extremely high standards, and the chrome and stainless work was renewed or polished as appropriate. The convertible top, top pad, headliner, rear window and boot were all redone as well, by Hillborn Motor Car Interiors.
Cosmetically, the car outstanding. The body is extremely straight and has very good gaps and fit. The paintwork is excellent, a particularly difficult feat in black, and is nicely set off by the whitewall tires and contrasting red coachline and wheel trim accents. The glass and lamps are excellent, and the car has Lucas headlamps and a pair of Lucas auxiliary “flamethrower” fog lamps. The chrome and other metal trim are very good overall, with light wear only. The convertible top is outstanding throughout, both inside and out, including the wood.
The interior is largely original and has been exceptionally-well preserved. The leather is only lightly creased, but is superb overall. The carpets are excellent, as is the wood. The instruments and switches are also in superb shape. The car has covered just 58,000 kilometers, or approximately 35,000 miles, and the condition of the interior speaks to the car’s indoor storage as well as the exceedingly high original quality of construction.
The trunk is in marvelous condition as well, with lovely and complete carpets and the original tool set still present. The engine compartment was fully detailed and is exceptional. It is extremely clean and the cosmetic condition of the components is impressive as well.
The car’s mechanical condition also speaks to the car’s low mileage. It starts and operates superbly, with none of the valve lifter noise that often affects these cars, even when the engine is cold. The operation of the gearbox is also impressive, with none of the lurching or thud sounds when transitioning down into first gear, or shifting from neutral into drive or reverse, a problem that sometimes afflicts these cars.
This is a superb opportunity to acquire an outstanding example of an exceedingly rare model. One of just 27 H. J. Mulliner LHD dropheads built, this particular car is extremely appealing in all respects. It has excellent history, and is in extremely nice condition, both mechanically and cosmetically. It drives and operates superbly, a reflection of its low original mileage, and is sure to appeal to the seasoned collector with the highest standards.
