Descended from the Turismo Internazionale class of Italian saloon car racing, the Giulia Ti and its homologated racing variant the Super Ti, are among the earliest sport sedans and are the ancestors of today’s widely available “hot hatches”. The technical specification of the Giulia Ti was impressive, with disc brakes, the larger 1600cc (rather than 1300cc) dual overhead cam powerplant, 5-speed transmission, and a wonderful chassis that allowed the family man tremendous entertainment while still appearing to be a responsible patriarch, an unusually rare combination in the period. As a result of their entertaining driving experience and impressive mechanical specification, the cars are sought after today by enthusiasts who now regard an entertaining performance sedan as commonplace, but may not appreciate how special it was to find such a car in the 1960s.

This particular car has been recently and comprehensively restored at a cost exceeding $50,000. The body was restored and the paintwork renewed approximately 4 years ago, and a new interior fitted. The mechanical aspects were redone and upgraded as well, including a 2 liter engine with twin Weber carburetors, rebuilt transmission, rebuilt and upgraded suspension, larger brakes, restored wheels, and new tires. This work was performed by Santo’s Italian Car Service in Southern California.

Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression with very nice paint over a straight, rust-free body. The panels fit well other than the hood, whose fit is asymmetrical but could be rectified with relative ease. The chrome and brightwork are very good to excellent throughout, and the glass and lights are also excellent. The wheels have been refinished in dark grey and wear Vredestein Sprint Classic tires.

The interior is in excellent condition overall, with high quality upholstery and carpets, both of which are in as new condition. The dashboard upholstery is also excellent and the trim and gauges are in very good condition. The car has a very cool integrated gauge cluster that includes a ribbon speedometer and stylized tachometer, which is unique to early Tis such as this car. The headliner is in excellent condition as well, and was obviously replaced during the restoration. The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel is excellent.

The engine compartment is clean, with solid and attractive presentation, including the inner fenders. It is clear that the engine and ancillaries were recently rebuilt and while not detailed for show, the engine compartment is very clean for a driver level car. The trunk is trimmed with carpet to match the interior and the trunk floor is solid throughout.

The car is very exciting to drive, with dramatically improved performance thanks to the upgrades. The engine runs well once warm, with plenty of power from the 2.0 liter displacement and big Weber carburetors. The car accelerates enthusiastically and makes great noise. The brakes grab authoritatively and the suspension is firm, which provides excellent body control and very entertaining handling. The synchromesh is excellent and the overall operation of the gearbox is excellent. All in all, the car is an enthusiastic and spirited car that captures Alfa Romeo’s famous “cuore sportivo.”

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a comprehensively restored and upgraded Giulia Ti at far less than the cost of restoration. An exciting car to drive which was obviously prepared without regard to cost but with considerable enthusiasm, this is a superb example of this early performance sedan that its next enthusiastic owner will surely enjoy.
