1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce

Red with Black Leather

The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulia Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the line, thanks to its 1600cc version of the venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard car, and as is often the case with Italian cars, the latest models are the most developed.

This particular example was sold new in California, and retains its California black license plates. It has a generally straight body, with a fairly recent and very high ‘driver’ quality repaint in what appears to be the original color. The chrome has been restored throughout, and is in excellent order accordingly. The glass and lenses are all good order, although there is one small star in center of the windscreen. This car is fitted with a sporting Talbot side mirror in the correct location. It sits on repainted wheels with as-new hub caps, and period correct Michelin tires.

The interior was restored to a similarly high level, with the seats and door panels having been redone in leather, and correct replacement mats installed to the floors, in combination with correct wool carpets. The gauges have been restored. The factory steering wheel is present, and the interior chrome is all in good order. The canvas top material has been recently replaced, and looks excellent. The trunk has also been restored, and features the correct rubber mat on the floor.

The engine bay is painted black, and shows very well. Many correct details are in place, including the nearly impossible to replace cast aluminum air box. The underside is not overly detailed, but appears solid at this time. Although this is a black plate California car, some repairs have been performed to the underside and rocker panels, as is often the case on Alfas of this era.

Alfa enthusiasts will be thrilled with the driving experiences offered by this Veloce. The car starts easily from cold, revs freely, producing excellent power with little, if any smoke. The motor makes excellent oil pressure both when warm and cold. The transmission synchros are excellent, even on third to second gear downshifts when cold. The clutch operates properly, and the throughout bearing make no noise. The suspension and steering box are exceedingly tight and responsive. The brakes are extraordinarily effective, and pull the car down straight.

Included with the car is the owner’s manual, and the matching spare wheel and tire.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a wonderfully restored, but usable example of this quintessential Italian sports car. It has a fresh appearance, but is not so nice as to discourage its use. The Giulia Veloce represents the most technically advanced and powerful variant of the Giulietta/Giulia Spider series, and the sprightly performance from the 1600cc Weber equipped DOHC engine, 5-speed transmission, and wonderful overall driving experience, will encourage the new owner to get out and enjoy this car as much as possible. Of the 10,318 Giulia Spyders produced, just 1,091 were true Veloce specification cars.
