The TZ1 is a very special competition car built in extremely limited numbers. Introduced at the Turin Auto Salon in 1962, it is built on a sophisticated tubular chassis. The chassis is a dedicated tubular unit that weighs just 125 pounds, and as a result, ensuring that the TZ1 is a Giulia only in the loosest sense of the term. The specification is impressive, with independent suspension and disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear), aerodynamic Zagato Kamm tail bodywork, and Alfa Romeo’s venerable twin cam engine. With a weight of just 1459 pounds, the car was capable of 140mph. In the hands of privateers, the cars were incredibly successful, sweeping their class at Le Mans, Sebring, the Nurburgring, the Targa Florio, and the Coupe des Alpes. Just 120 examples were built making them tremendously rare and highly collectible.

As confirmed by Alfa Romeo Storico in 2014, this car was completed the 18th of March 1965 and sold to Alfa Romeo France. Its original color combination was red with black interior and the car remained in France until October 1990, when Tonnie van der Velden purchased it and exported it to the Netherlands. The car remained in the Netherlands until March of 1993, when it was sold to Japan, where it remained until approximately 2000. In recent years, it has been in a significant Alfa Romeo collection in California.

Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression with a straight body and attractive paintwork. It was a good quality job and now has a few chips and surface cracks. The panels fit and operate well. The brightwork is in good condition, with some patina and light pitting. The glazing is in very nice condition as well, and the car is fitted with Carello headlamps which are in excellent shape.

The interior is nicely presented as well, with functional dashboard in very good condition. The Jaeger instruments are in excellent shape, as is the wood-rimmed steering wheel. A navigator’s lamp has been fitted in front of the passenger. The flying buttress seats are in good shape as are the carpets and other upholstery. The headliner is lined and there is full carpeting, door panels, and upholstery. The car has competition harnesses, rear roll bar, and fire extinguisher fitted.

The engine compartment is tidy and purposeful but not recently detailed and shows some aging in places. It is honest and generally correct in appearance although the car has been fitted with velocity stacks. The rear compartment is fully trimmed and the spare is in place.

The car was inspected by Marnix Dillenius, a well-regarded TZ owner and historian, who found the car to be a genuine TZ-1 Stradale with unusually good integrity and correctness. He describes it as a late production Stradale with matching numbers and Zagato body number 808 located in several places. The car retains all its original components save for its airbox. The car is in good shape overall and is sound but would benefit from a thorough service before being driven extensively or aggressively.
