1965 Ferrari 275 GTS
s/n 6909 engine stamped no. 7409
Silver Green Metallic with Black Leather Interior
Introduced alongside the 275 GTB at the Paris motor show in October 1964, the 275 GTS is a stylish and elegant open air car. Featuring disc brakes and independent suspension all round, and a new rear-mounted transaxle for improved weight distribution, the cars were technologically advanced and performed well. Together with their understated but beautiful Pininfarina styling, the cars were and remain desirable and usable open cars to actually drive and enjoy
This particular car is the 17th example built of just 200 total 275 GTS's, and left Maranello on the 18th of March 1965 destined for an Italian toothpaste magnate by the name of Dr. Giovanni Boda. In Milan, it originally wore the plate 26393 MI, and was subsequently sold on to a 33 year old woman in 1968, also in Milan. In the early 1970`s, respected Ferrari Club of America leader and enthusiast Tom Williamson, Jr. of North Carolina bought the car. He kept it in a climate-controlled garage and owned and cared for the car for 35 years. The car appears never to have had any rust or accident damage. With its current owner, it has received continued conscientious attention to ensure that it remains, as ever, a lovely example. At the present, it is fitted with the correct tipo 213 motor, though it is a non-matching to this chassis unit bearing number 7409.
Under the current ownership period s/n 6909 has seen much cosmetic and mechanical work by Perfect Reflections and with Patrick Ottis. The dashboard was restored, including the wood, and the tachometer and speedometer disassembled and cleaned. The steering wheel was also replaced, as was the shift knob, and the center console was also redone. The tonneau cover was properly reinstalled as well. A correct pair of exterior mirrors was sourced and installed, along with a correct prancing horse for the grille. The windscreen was also replaced, and the bumpers were removed, polished, and shimmed to fit the car properly. The engine compartment was detailed, with various hardware and latches about the car refinished, as well as much other work performed in the engine compartment. This included the installation of a new tar-topped Magnetti Marelli battery, new rubber bumpers, location and restoration of the extremely rare correct early 275 GTS air cleaner, and the refinishing of the valve covers. The hood was removed and the underside was restored, including the mounting brackets and springs. With Patrick Ottis, the car received new tie rods, and alignment, full fluid change, and steering adjustment. The car has a complete correct tool roll, as well as its service and parts manuals and leather pouch for the books.
Cosmetically, the car is very nice. The paint was done to very good standards some years ago and shows a few blemishes in selected areas, including some stress marks and light orange peel. The chrome is excellent, save for some pitting on the license plate lamps. The Borrani wire wheels have been beautifully polished and are stunning. The lamps and glass are excellent, including the Marchal headlamps.
The interior is very nice as well, with excellent upholstery, dash, and accessories. The seats and door panels are extremely nice, with just some light wear to the driver`s seat bolster. The dashboard, wood, instruments, and switches are excellent as well. The instruments (aside from the clock) function properly, and even the air distribution sliders work. The carpets are excellent throughout, and the steering wheel is in superb shape. Also of note is that the car is fitted with optional and rare electric windows.
The trunk and engine compartment have both been well-restored. Both trunk lights work, and there is a matching spare Borrani wire wheel with Michelin XWX tire. The complete tool roll is also present, along with books and the jack. The engine compartment is spotlessly detailed and quite correct. As previously mentioned, an original type Magnetti Marelli battery is installed, as is the correct windscreen washer bag, horns, and compressor.
This particular car is an exceptionally fine driving example. It feels solid and the suspension is compliant, while the engine is very strong and makes excellent power. The brakes are effective and do not cause the car to pull at all. The transaxle has superb synchros when both warm and cold, making this car a true pleasure to use in all circumstances.
This car is an ideal example to use, either casually or for tours and events. It is cosmetically attractive, but not so much as to discourage its new owner from using it, and it is a true pleasure to drive. It is mechanically sound and complete with books and tools, needing nothing besides a new owner to use and enjoy it.
