Description

1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2
s/n 07113, Engine no. 7113
Argento with Red Leather

Sharing many features with Ferrari’s highly-regarded 330 GTC two-seat road car of the same era, the four-seat 330 GT is a practical exotic ideal for daily or weekend use on family outings. Generally considered to have been available in two series, this car is one of only a few ‘interim’ cars featuring the mechanical updates (most notably a 5-speed gearbox) of the series II cars with the appearance of the series I cars. This car also has the suspended (rather than floor-hinged) pedals and electric windows of the later cars.

This particular car was originally dark grey with a red leather interior and was sold new in Italy, where it remained for the first several years of its life. The car comes with copies of its first four registrations, which indicate that it was registered in Brescia, Milano, Roma, and Varese. The car’s original owner was Angelo Panichi, who paid 6,500,000 Italian Lira for the car on the 5th of July 1965. The car’s third and 4th owners were both women, Ada Gregnoldo and Maria Luisa Castagna, who was just 29 years old when she purchased the car with approximately 14,000km on it. Many years later, in 1996 the car found its way to California when offered for sale by a dealer in Walnut Creek, California, not far from San Francisco. The car’s previous owner purchased it in 2000, and has had much restorative work performed over the years to bring the car to its current condition. There are several thousand dollars of invoices included with the car reflecting some but not all of the restorative work.

According to the previous owner, the restoration efforts included the following, all of which was completed in the last 200 miles: Engine top end (valve job), rebuilt distributors with new caps, rebuilt shocks, brake rebuild with turned rotors, rebuilt calipers and master cylinder, new clutch, various front end suspension parts, new chrome inside and out, wheels rebuilt with stainless spokes and new tires by Rite Way in Walnut Creek, rebuilt carburetors, rebuilt starter, completely new paint, body rubber, and window seals throughout, refinished dash wood and steering wheel, and a new dash pad.

Following its restoration, the car is in very nice driver condition. The paintwork was done to very good standards, and is nearly free of blemishes with a few stress cracks on the hood, and other minor marks. The panels are straight and the gaps generally good, although the trunk lid sits a bit high. The chrome is excellent throughout, although two of the four chrome corners of the front windscreen trim are missing, and the finish on the exhaust tips is showing age. The glass and lamps are excellent across the board, with only a few minor marks to the windscreen. The car is updated with four Hella H4 headlamps. Also included in the sale are the two Carello driving lamps.

The interior is in excellent condition, with both leather and carpets having a fresh appearance. The dashboard and instruments are in excellent shape, and the wood has been restored with a glossy finish. The gauges and switchgear are correct in appearance and are in very good physical condition. The headliner and visors are correct and in excellent shape. A modern CD player with iPod compatibility and modern speakers have been added, and there is a CD changer in the trunk.

The engine compartment is extremely clean throughout and is fairly correct other than in small details such as the spark plug wires. It is impressively well detailed and shows many signs of recent maintenance. The trunk is properly restored with correct carpet and the car has a Borrani spare wire wheel, jack, and tool roll without tools.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a cosmetically attractive and mechanically sorted classic 4.0 Liter front-engined V12 Ferrari. An interim car with 5-speed transmission, this example is one of just 125 built and is finished in a timeless and tasteful color combination. Nevertheless, the car remains an excellent value, embodying many of the same characteristics that drive other classic Ferraris to increasingly astronomical values, this car is an outstanding way to get a usable car that provides a substantially similar experience with a much lower cost of admission. The car comes with a file of service records, copies of the car’s original Italian registrations, documentation provided by Marcel Massini, in addition to its jack, tool bag (less tools), shop manual, body parts manual, mechanical parts manual, owner’s manual, original brochure, and wiring diagram.
