Description

1965 Kougar Jaguar 3.8S s/n 1BS5621DN Red with Black Leather Here at Fantasy Junction, we are all very impressed with this Kougar Jaguar. Its performance and craftsmanship have exceeded our expectations, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to Jaguar or sports car special enthusiasts looking for an exciting and inexpensive addition to their collection. This particular example was built in 1979 and is titled in California as a 1965 Jaguar 3.8S, the car from which most of its components are derived. It is powered by a 3.8S twin overhead cam inline 6 cylinder Jaguar engine, mated to a Jaguar 4-speed transmission with overdrive. Front and rear suspension is taken directly from a Jaguar, retaining Jaguars innovative inboard rear disc brakes and independent rear suspension. This example has a limited slip differential. The chassis is a very rigid round tubular space frame design, covered by an attractive fiberglass body distinctive of the 1950s era. Sold new to Mr. Dermot Downs of the United Kingdom in 1979 as a left hand drive car, this car was imported to the USA, and resold to Seattle in 1981. Shortly thereafter the car was sold to San Jose, CA were the owner at the time repainted it, before selling it to the current owner in 2005. While some Kougars were delivered in kit from to their first owner, this car was assembled at the factory. The quality of assembly and level of craftsmanship reflect this. The car operates beautifully having been treated to much recent work and sorting by Jaguar professionals. John Buddenbaum just finished replacing the head gasket and doing a valve job, balancing and timing the carburetors, installing a new coil and ignition harness, and rebuilding the brake hydraulic system. New 72 spoke Dayton wire wheels with Rudge knock-offs hubs assemblies have been fitted with new tires. A new radiator and new radiator hoses have been fitted. Much of the fuel system has been replaced, and a new marine grade wiring harness installed to wart off those Lucas gremlins for good. Many aesthetic upgrades have been made as well. New `32 Ford headlights with halogen bulbs were fitted, the interior trimmed in new, high quality upholstery, and an XKE type wood wheel fitted which nicely caps off the period appearance and feel of the car. The performance is quite brisk indeed. Considerably lighter and more agile than an XKE or Jaguar sedan, this Kougar will out corner, out accelerate, and stop faster than virtually any Jaguar available to the general public in the 1950s or 1960s. The engine starts easily and makes excellent power accompanied by the wonderful inline 6 cylinder exhaust note. The transmission shifts smoothly and deliberately, with excellent syncros and working overdrive. The suspension is well balanced with minimal body roll, and the brakes are effective. Cosmetically, the car is excellent. The body is smooth, and the paint work done to a high caliber. The new wires wheels are perfect, with the balance of the brightwork is in very good condition. The engine bay and suspension arms are fully detailed. The interior looks new, with period correct Smiths gauges and beautiful engine turned aluminum dash. The car is fitted with a full cockpit tonneau cover, but no top or top frame. With this car comes documentation about the history of this particular example, notes about Kougars in general, and some records for the recent work performed. Registered as a 1965 year model this car is smog exempt in California. A riot to drive, and eligible for any event that a 1965 Jaguar XK series car would be, this Kougar 3.8S is excellent value and a fascinating conversation piece.
