Description

1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk. I
s/n B9473214
Red with Black Leather

Perhaps no other streetcar of the era taps into the primal concept of: Small Car-Big Motor so much as the Sunbeam Tiger. With a generous power to weight ratio, and very short wheel base, the Sunbeam Tigers are very exciting cars.

A true, factory built, Sunbeam Tiger Mk. I, this example was fitted with a 260 c.i. Ford V8 power plant which has been rebuilt as part of a comprehensive restoration. The restoration work was a frame off effort which included, chrome, paint, interior carpet and upholstery, convertible top, and wheels. Many of the mechanical components were also restored. The motor has logged break-in miles only since the restoration was completed, while the car recently completed the Copper State rally in 2006.

The body is very straight with good hood and trunk fit, and satisfactory door gaps. The bright red paint is of very high quality has show virtually no flaws, use marks, or aging. The chrome appears to be new throughout, and is excellent accordingly. Much of the lenses appear to be new, having been replaced as part of the restoration. The black vinyl soft top is in like new condition, with no fogging to the rear window. The car sits on very nice alloy wheels, with new 185/70R13 tires.

The interior has been tastefully trimmed in high quality black leather with red piping, and fresh black carpets. This example retains it factory wood rimmed steering wheel, and factory oil pressure, tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauges by Jaeger. The wood dash has been professionally refinished and is excellent.

The engine bay was restored while the motor was out such that the inner fender wells and firewall are beautifully painted to match the body color. Evidence of much recent work is visible under the hood, including new wiring, heater controls, and cooling system hoses, among other items.

The underside is representative of a full frame-off restoration job, with many components having been refinished in gloss black. The trunk has repainted to match the body, and is fitted with older matting- possibly original, with minor flaws.

The car drives well. It appears that the chassis has been reinforced as part of the restoration in an effort to make the car more rigid and responsive. The motor starts easily, sounds great, and pulls strong. The brakes are effective and the transmission precise. More negative camber has been added to the front suspension of this example to improve its turning capabilities. The car is somewhat heavy to steer at lower speeds, a possible by product of the negative camber.

With this example comes a full cockpit tonneau cover, two tool rolls, one with a complete set of tools, jack, and restored spare tire.
