Description

1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring
s/n AR*192760* Eng. No. AR00601*05555*
Red with Black and Red Piping

Better appointed than the Giulietta and the Guilia, which served as Alfa Romeo’s sporting volume models, the 2600 was a refined performance touring car equipped for comfort. Available in several forms, including with elegant Spider bodywork by touring by Touring, the cars were consummate long distance tourers that channeled the spirit of Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin-cam six cylinder touring cars from the 1930s and early postwar years.

The engine was a direct derivative of the previous twin cam powerplant, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp. The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too, and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the 2600s were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

Today, the 2600 remains an elegant open car that is very suitable for long distance touring events, thanks to their larger displacement, wider torque band, standard 5 speed transmission, and larger carrying capacity. The 2600 Spider is ideally suited for driving enthusiasts looking for an open air experience but expect to travel hundreds of miles over several days and arrive in comfort.

This particular car is a late production disc brake example that was previously part of the Gene Ponder collection. Under his stewardship, the car was restored, and then Fantasy Junction sold the car to its current owner about eight years ago. During his ownership period, the cylinder head was freshened and the head gasket replaced, as well as miscellaneous other maintenance work performed.

The car is in nice driver condition, with very good paintwork over a solid and straight body. The panels fit and operate well and are free of visible corrosion. An inspection of the undercarriage confirms that the car is free of corrosion, although the outer rockers were replaced in the past, which is typical for these cars. The chrome ranges from excellent to good, with excellent bumpers and hubcaps, and a bit of light aging visible on the window trims and door handles. The paintwork was done to very good standards and remains in very good shape, with a few stone chips on the front of the car from road use. The glass and lights are very good to excellent, and the wheels are nicely refinished and wear Michelin X tires. The rubber is in generally good condition, other than the seals on the quarter windows, which are deteriorated.

The interior is also in very good shape, with reupholstered black leather seats with red piping, which are in excellent shape. The carpets were also redone and are in excellent shape, and the car has red over mats as well as rubber mats bearing Alfa Romeo and Touring logos. The instruments and switches appear unrestored and are nice considering this, although the instruments are showing some age. The top of the dashboard has a few cracks. The steering wheel is in excellent shape.

The trunk and engine compartment are both clean and correct in appearance. The trunk contains correct rubber mat, and the car has its tool box with tools. A full tonneau is also in place, as is the owner’s manual. The engine compartment is very clean and generally correct throughout, with nicely polished valve cover and intake plenum. The car is equipped with triple Solex carburetors. The firewall and inner fenders are in excellent shape, and the car is equipped with correct VDO windscreen washer fluid bag.

This is a fine opportunity to acquire a very nice 2600 Touring Spider. These cars represent excellent value, with handsome open bodywork, four place seating, and long-legged touring capability. This makes them genuinely usable cars and this car, which presents strongly but isn’t so nice as to discourage its owner from using it, is an ideal candidate to drive and enjoy. It runs and drives well and is complete with tonneau cover, top boot, floor mats, owner’s manual, and tools.
