Alfa Romeo, the Italian giant of automobile manufacturing was not always a prolific producer of great sports cars. Pre-war and some post war Alfas were largely handmade using detailed labor and complex fabrication. All this changed when the Giulia and Giulietta entered the market with relatively low entry costs and fine performance, securing a highly desirable position with the public. These new offerings were sporty, and charming, yet finely trimmed, giving an air of sophistication that fashionable men and women appreciated. Both cars enjoyed success, with strong sales in Europe and America.
This particular late production Giulia Spider Tipo 10123 series (as shown on the data plate) was purchased when the current owner saw it parked on the side of the road at the Palo Alto Concours in 1997. The car was advertised with 51,000 original miles at that time, still retaining the black and yellow California plates (retained on the car today). Over the course of the past 20 years, the current owner has maintained and serviced the car, enjoying general use and participating in local shows and events.
The overall condition of this car can be described at a good driver standard. The paint shows good gloss overall with minor stress cracks, minor bubbling on the hood, and a few areas of chips and scratches. The chrome and other trim are straight, however some parts will eventually require cosmetic attention including, most notably, the grille. The door handles show minor pitting and the bumpers and side trim exhibit surface hazing. The car sits on properly silver finished wheels with stainless centers and properly sized tires retaining good tread. The interior has been recently redone to nice driver standards (February 2016) using high quality vinyl and new foam on the seats, correctly fitted carpet, and door panels. Factory gauges, steering wheel, and levers are all in nice condition and appear to be original to the car. A nice black canvas top is fitted with a vinyl tonneau cover installed along the rear cowl. The engine bay is quite tidy with a correct Solex carburetor and air intake hosing properly routed. A new and correct silver hood insulation pad has also been recently installed. The trunk and underside are all in good order, and have clearly been maintained to a general driver standard. The underside of the car is consistent with a long-term original California car –dry and not showing significant corrosion in any of the usually suspect areas.
Recent mechanical work this year includes rebuilding fuel and radiator tanks, installing a new fuel pump and adding a pressure regulator, replacing various fuel lines, new handbrake cable, carb and choke adjustments, new battery, new rear brake hoses, and brake adjustments. Some miles have been added since some of the sorting and mechanical work has been completed. The car starts easily, has good power and response, and a nice gearbox with good synchros, both warm and cold. Braking and overall driving is consistent with cars of this period.
A file of records and receipts are included with the car outlining the recent work, “For Sale” sign from 1997, and a handful of various records attesting to the miles through various years of ownership. Original jack and a small box of various spare parts also accompany the car.
Alfa Spiders, particularly the Giulietta and Giulia series cars, are enjoyable, unpretentious cars with a strong following to accompany the delightful driving experience. This driver quality Giulia Spider is an ideal car to drive and enjoy, offering the new owner many miles of motoring pleasure and years of gratifying ownership.
