Description

1966 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT s/n 244392 Red with Black Interior This is a nicely restored `stepnose`, `low arch` example of the Giulia GT, which is generally regarded to the purest and earliest form of the popular and iconic 105-series cars (Giulia GT, GTA, GTV). The attractive and well-proportioned styling was the work of Bertone, and incorporates a nice balance of curves and angles, while the powerplant was an evolution of Alfa Romeo`s venerable and sophisticated twin-cam four-cylinder engine. Giulia GTs are fitted with the desirable twin -Weber carburetors. This example has seen much recent mechanical and cosmetic restoration work, including a rebuilt engine from the crankshaft up. It appears as though the car has always been red. At some point in its life the car had been repainted, and in 2006 the frontal area was painted a second time to remove what rock chips and wear existed at that time. This work was done to high standards and looks fresh. The panels are straight and the gaps and fit are all very good. The front bumper and grille surround are freshly chromed. The door handles are in good condition, the window frames are very good, and the remainder of the chrome is excellent throughout, and has likely been renewed as part of the restoration. The period correct and rare Cromodora wheels were refinished and new tires fitted, and all glass and lights are excellent. All of the rubber weather-stripping and door seals look to have been replaced at this time as well. The interior is either exceptional and original, or has been redone with absolute correctness. The upholstery and carpeting is excellent throughout. The dash top is excellent while the faux wood on the dashboard is showing some minor cracking in a few places. The remainder of the interior such as the seat and door upholstery, and headliner is excellent. There is a roll bar and fire extinguisher fitted, as well as a pair of speakers in the rear parcel shelf, though no radio is fitted. The rear seats were removed to fit the bolt in roll bar, are unmodified, and come with the car. The trunk could benefit from some detail attention, but is fundamentally sound. There is no rust in evidence and the difficult to find rubber mats are present but need to be reglued in several places. There is no spare tire. The engine compartment is both mechanically and cosmetically tidy, but not detailed for show. It would respond well to and afternoon`s work of detailing. There are performance air filters fitted to the twin Weber carburetors. The motor was rebuilt by Jan Hjorth approximately 1,500 miles ago, and with the car comes a photo documentation booklet for this work. The underside is in sound, solid condition but has not been detailed. Sometime in this car`s past professional rust repair was carried out under the passenger`s and driver`s footwells. The work was very well done. Today there is no significant rust to speak of, and there is much evidence of recent work to the exhaust system, suspension, and elsewhere as well. The springs are new, as are the Koni Classic red shock absorbers. The car has a tight and responsive feel. The engine starts easily, revs quickly and produces excellent power with no smoke. The brakes and clutch operate as they should. Second gear syncro, a common weak point on Alfa, is excellent both warm and cold. When reversing, this car needs to be held in gear. This absolutely does not necessitate the rebuilt of the transmission. While perfect for street use, this example would also be strong enough for casual track days or autocross events. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nicely restored but also usable example of these important and enjoyable cars. Historically, these cars have been quite affordable, which means that restorative work has not always been performed to the highest standards, but thankfully, this example has been spared that treatment, making it among the better examples available. As more people become aware of their unique blend of practicality, classic Italian character and styling, and enjoyable driving experience, these cars are sure to continue to increase in value.
