Description

1966 Jaguar XKE 4.2 Litre Roadster
s/n 1E12173Engine no. 7E7102-9
Opalescent Green with Suede Green Leather

The E-Type was unveiled in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, following the famous 11th hour disorder (one of the cars was driven to the show from England with just hours to spare). The car was an immediate sensation: its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons’ values beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar’s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar’s legendary twin cam inline-6. The cars were continuously developed, with the addition of 4.2 liter engine and fully synchronized gearboxes for 1965. Later cars, particularly in the United States, had safety and emissions equipment that negatively influenced both performance and aesthetics, so these Series I 4.2 liter cars are widely considered to be the pick of the bunch.

This particular example is quite unique. A 19,000 mile, matching-numbers car, now comprehensively restored by Jaguar specialists to concours standards, it boasts both excellent history as well as a current jewelry-esque presentation. A bare-metal-up repaint has been performed in its original and very attractive opalescent green, and the original suede green colored interior was also completely re-trimmed. The restoration was not only cosmetic, but also mechanical, and the end result is fitting for a collector with the highest requirements in presentation and performance.

History:
Sold new in Chicago in 1966. Mr. Ford, who lived near Chicago, bought this car in June of 1968. A lube sticker in the doorjamb showed 10,340 miles dated 8/9/69 (sticker is included). Mr. Ford stated he took the car on only one trip and that was to St. Louis, otherwise, he only drove it to his hair salon near his home and back. The car was off the road and sat since 1984. When the second owner, Jim Kakuska bought the car it had 15,918 miles on it, which Mr. Ford said was correct mileage. Jim stored the car and the previous owner bought the car in September 2012. At that time the paint on the car was about 60% original with the exception of some paint touch up that had been done. The interior was original. There was a small scrape on the right front fender.

Restoration Overview:
The most recent owner bought the car to restore and use on the Red Rock Rallye in the fall of 2013. The car was stripped to bare metal, except the original undercoating was left on the car. Other than the scrape to the right front fender the body was straight. The spare tire well had some minor corrosion, and all below the rear bumper was replaced and spot-welded as it was when original. Similarly, the foot wells had a small amount of corrosion, and were replaced. A few other small spots in the floor were repaired. The engine, though showing minor wear, was comprehensively rebuilt. The transmission and differential showed almost no wear, but bearings and seals were replaced as a matter of course. In total, the work was a comprehensive restoration done to exacting standards and with all items finished as original. The goal was to make the car just as it was when it was new. When finished it was used on the 20 day Red Rock Rallye in September 2013, and over 2,000 trouble-free miles were logged. Sometime after the Rallye and after more use, the previous owner undertook a freshening of the car to concours standards. Due to some chipping underneath both the underneath of the bonnet and spare well below rear bumpers were repainted. While the chrome was off it was re-plated to show standards. An attempt to detail was undertaken to get to as fine and original standard as possible. The current mileage is just over 19,000.
