The E-Type was unveiled in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, following the famous 11th hour disorder (one of the cars was driven to the show from England with just hours to spare). The car was an immediate sensation: its specification was state of the art, its bodywork arrestingly gorgeous, and the price surprisingly affordable. It embodied William Lyons’ values beautifully and it is no surprise that the E-Type has become such a legendary part of automotive history. The specification clearly demonstrated Jaguar`s racing experience and included independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari was still using live rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar’s legendary twin cam inline-6. The cars were continuously developed, however, the arrival of American safety legislation and the twelve cylinder engine made later cars less attractive and less sporting, making the series I cars the pick of the bunch.

This particular example is a particularly straight, solid, and undisturbed example, stressing originality. Sold new in Palo Alto, the original owner resold the car after two years of enjoyment its second owner, the president of the Jaguar Club, who retained the car for 40 years until his passing in 2004. His family sold the car in 2008. The third owner was a highly capable airplane mechanic, who owns several other Jaguars. During his ownership, ending in 2012, the brake and clutch hydraulic systems were serviced, and the radiator, heater core, and cooling lines rebuilt or replaced.

The car’s presentation stresses originality. The original paint is evident except blends across nose, where mirrors were removed on front fenders, and under the rear bumper on the driver’s side. The car was ever fully repainted. With the exception of a few pin holes in the passenger foot well, there appears to be no rust anywhere about the undercarriage. Likewise, there is no evidence of collision damage or repairs. The interior is original, save for the carpets in front of the seats. While the new owner will likely replace the upholstery on the seats, top of console, and headliner (visors are missing), cars boasting this level of originality are few and far between.

From a driving perspective, the car has a very nice feel. It sits on chrome wire wheels, with Michelins from the seventies which are flat spotted and need to be changed before car is used for regular driving.

Included with the sale is the manual pack and warranty card, full original tool kit, and matching spare. The car still retains its original California black license plates.

Commonly viewed as one of the most beautiful automotive shapes constructed during the 1960s, it is no surprise that the Jaguar E-Type, and particularly the covered headlamp equipped Series I, has enjoyed such significant value gains in recent years. As cars of this era continue to appreciate, it is highly original and structurally solid examples such as this one which are likely to prove to be the best investments.
