Description
1966 Lamborghini 350 GT
Superleggera Aluminum Touring Coupe
s/n 0358, Engine No. 0325
Silver with Black Interior
Legend has it that Ferrucio Lamborghini set out to build his own sports car after a disagreement with Enzo Ferrari. Whatever his motivations, the Italian industrial magnate was soon producing a car that was better built, more technologically sophisticated, and better performing than contemporary Ferraris. The technical specifications were impressive, including a quad cam V-12, fully independent suspension, disc brakes, and a five-speed gearbox, initially made by ZF, and then in house by Lamborghini. The contemporaneous Ferraris however, still employed single cam motors, live rear axles, and four-speed gearboxes. The contemporary press reveled at the refinement, build quality, performance of this newcomer, and was pleased to find that the 350GT was also more luxurious and less demanding to drive than Ferraris, while still remaining equally involving and capable.
The bodywork was by Touring of Milan, who is generally regarded to have made the best quality bodies in Italy at the time. The styling, while not as instantly beautiful as some of Pininfarina`s work, was well-proportioned and attractive in its own right. The body was also built in aluminum, although construction was switched to steel when the larger 4 litre motor was introduced. As a result, the performance of the 350GTs and 400GTs was comparable, which the 350 achieved through lighter weight.
This particular car comes with records back to the early 1980`s and its history is as follows:
-1966: sold new to Portugal
-1980: sold to Ken Browning in Canada with broken engine (broken timing chain and camshaft). Ken Browning started the Lamborghini Club of Canada and was an avid collector of Lamborghinis. He had a museum dedicated to the marque and worked for General Motor of Canada. The car is featured in the Lamborghini Buyer`s Guide on pages 22 and 26. He was a very enthusiastic promoter of vintage Lamborghinis and wrote many articles for various magazines during the 1980`s. A 1986 Automobile Quarterly article entitled `Lamborghini, Quest for Perfection` won an award for journalism. He was also a talented automotive artist and produced a series of pencil drawings of all the Lamborghinis that he owned: 350GT, Espada, and a P400 Miura.
-1980`s: Ken Browning commenced the rebuild of the engine, brakes and suspension, ordering many parts directly from the factory with a number of correspondences with service department head Ubaldo Sgarzi in his quest to locate the parts required for a rebuild. It took over 4 years to locate all of the parts needed for the rebuild.
-1988: Engine rebuild is complete and is reassembled and running.
-1990`s Ken Browning dies and the car is passes through the hands of two subsequent Canadian owners.
-2000: Purchased at auction by attorney Terry Dunn of Lynchburg, Virginia. Brake boosters and full brake caliper rebuilds done by White Post Restorations. Clutch slave and master cylinders rebuilt as well. Borrani wire wheels rebuilt by Dayton Wire Wheels.
-2002: Sold at auction to John Gilson of Huntington Beach, California. Replaced leaking rear differential seal.
-2003: Sold to current owner.
-2004: Car running but in need of attention, many little things to be put right. Both rear wires wheels of the Dayton rebuild break on test drive, spokes were undersized and rusted. Subsequent reconditioning of the car as follows:

Consequently, the car performs extremely well, and is also very presentable. The paint is generally good, although there are some areas of mild cracking, as well as minor and superficial bubbling in the splash areas. The underside of the car is extremely solid and free of rust or rust repair. The bumper chrome is extremely nice, though the window trims and front turn signal housings are showing their age. The glass is nice although there is some scratching on the side windows, which is common to these cars. The difficult to find one-piece Bosch headlamps are intact, and the rear lamps are the more attractive European units. The rubber around the windows is starting to show its age, but is complete and straight. The new Borrani wire wheels are impeccably polished and Michelin XWX tires are like new.
The interior is very nice. The seats appear to have been reupholstered, and are excellent. All the gauges and switches are in fantastic order, and the wood steering wheel is very nice. The headliner is extremely nice, as are the carpets. The dash and door panels are generally nice, with just the slightest signs of shrinkage in evidence. The trunk is fully upholstered, in excellent condition, and reveals a spare wheel that has also been restored. The engine compartment is tidy and attractive, and shows much evidence of proper care. The air cleaners have been chromed.
The recent work done to this car has made it an excuse-free car to drive. The engine pulls strong and smooth with excellent power and minimal smoke. The brakes are effective and balanced, and the suspension and shocks compliant. Because the transmission has just been rebuilt, second gear synchro is excellent both warm and cold. All the gauges and switches are fully operational, including the horn and clock.
Just 143 350GTs were ever constructed, making this an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a genuine Italian thoroughbred. This is the original Lamborghini and its historical significance and sophisticated technical features make it both collectible and highly attractive. These cars are extremely difficult to find, and this example with its known history and comprehensive maintenance is a very appealing example.
