Description

Ferrari 330 P4 Tribute by Speco
s/n AZ-315648
Red with Black Interior

Representing the then new trend towards mid-placement of engines in sports racing cars, the 330 P4 is a development of a series that began with the 250 P and 250 LM in 1963. Featuring Lucas fuel injection and a sophisticated and aerodynamic new chassis/ bodywork combination, the 250’s were replaced by the 330 P series, of which the P4 was the ultimate development. Just three examples of the P4 were built, making them among the rarest Ferraris in existence. Additionally, many consider them to be among the most beautiful cars ever built. Naturally, they are owned by collectors and worth many millions of dollars. Thus, high quality reconfigurations with Ferrari engines have garnered the interest of enthusiasts seeking the experience of the world’s most important automobiles without the out-of-reach price tag or uneasiness associated with enjoying such a valuable car.

This particular car is an absolutely spectacular tribute to the legendary Ferrari 330 P4 and displays jaw-dropping attention to detail and much modern racing technology. Starting with a Noble chassis and body (the same Noble now at work today in the United Kingdom producing some spectacular high performance cars), this car was constructed over a three and a half year period and required over 3500 hours to build.

Although the chassis and body were originally supplied by Noble, this car represents a level of craftsmanship, individuality and specification that is sufficient to warrant describing this car as a one-off. The specification includes 3 liter Ferrari V8, which is dry sumped and is fitted with Electromotive ignition and a Stack display which conveys a full complement of driver information including lap timing function. The engine is carbureted and has been rebuilt. The exhaust system is a custom designed ceramic coated stainless steel affair with electronic bypass valve that is adjustable from the cockpit so that the car can be run with or without mufflers at the touch of a button. The transaxle is a Porsche 915 5-speed unit, and the car is equipped with twin fuel cells, aluminum radiator, oil and transmission coolers, and twin electric cooling fans. Suspension is by pushrod rocker arms with inboard Ohlins coil-overs and double adjustable dampers, and adjustable front and rear anti roll bars. Braking is achieved by Wilwood brakes with six piston front and four piston rear calipers, double master cylinder, and cockpit adjustable balance bar. The car is equipped with a full under tray with rear diffuser, and custom modular alloy wheels with modern high performance low profile tires. The interior has carbon fiber racing seats with 6-point Wilans harnesses, and the car is right hand drive with right hand shift. The car has air conditioning and functioning heater and defrosters. The total weight is about 2200 pounds, giving a power to weight ratio around 9 pounds per horsepower.

While the specification is impressive on paper, the car is absolutely awesome in person. The quality of construction and attention to detail make the car truly extraordinary, and it is a true joy to behold because the more one looks, the more neat touches one sees. The level of fit and finish is exemplary, with excellent paint, both in terms of condition and execution. The car has covered virtually no miles since construction and is accordingly in near new condition. The lamps and lenses are excellent, as is the glazing. The diffuser, carbon fiber racing mirrors, and black modular alloy wheels signal the car’s performance intent, as do the low profile performance tires, which are 335 section at the rear! The wheels are 5-lug units and could be easily substituted for more period appearing 5-spoke Cromadora style lug mount wheels. The massive brakes also speak to the car’s seriousness, and the white exhaust tips are a neat vintage touch. A less vintage touch is the presence of an ENV badge, which stands for “Environmentally Neutral Vehicle”. This badge is not merely cheeky, but represents an organization that offsets carbon emissions from vehicles by using the money from donors to build clean power generation facilities and plant trees to offset the carbon produced by a vehicle.

The interior also reflects the quality of construction and attention to detail present in this car. The seats are stunning hard backed carbon fiber racing units, and are equipped with 6 point Willans harnesses. The steering wheel is a vintage style Momo prototipo, a wheel made famous by its inclusion in the Porsche 917. The dashboard and footwells have been upholstered in alcantara, which gives it a low glare and high quality finish. The alcantara in the footwells has been sewn with a quilted pattern. The dashboard also has vents for the air conditioning system, which works well. The sills, and indeed the entire frame and tub of the car, are powder coated gloss white, which gives an unusual and stunning appearance. The switch plates and switch gear are quality custom affairs that look very smart, and the car has a traditional Ferrari gated shifter. The roof panel is removable so that the car can be driven as a convertible.

The engine compartment and front compartment are truly outstanding in this car. The workmanship is absolutely stunning, from the powder coated frame to the pushrod actuated coil overs with remote reservoirs. The suspension components are tubular items that have been given a mirror-like finish, and the brake and intake ducts are high temperature aircraft grade hoses. The radiator is a large aluminum affair, and in the engine compartment, there are twin Setrab coolers for the gearbox and engine oil. The airboxes and inner panels in the engine compartment are Mylar foil coated, while the valve covers are red crinkle finished. All fuel and oil lines are stainless steel with Aeroquip fittings. Everything is immaculately clean, and it is likely impossible to open the engine lid of this car and not say “wow”.

This is a completely unique opportunity to acquire a true one-off built to the highest standards. The attention to detail is breathtaking, and the condition and cleanliness second to none. It is worth the trouble to see the car in person, and wherever it goes, it is sure to attract attention. Since its completion, it has been driven sparingly, and displayed at Concorso Italiano in 2010, where it created a sensation. The car is titled to an Arizona issued VIN as a 1966 Ferrari, and is street legal.
