Introduced in October of 1965 at the London Motor Show, the Aston Martin DB6 was the ultimate development of Aston Martin’s legendary line of six-cylinder David Brown cars before the arrival of the more angular DBS. Taking the already successful DB5 as a base, the DB6 included revised aerodynamics to reduce rear end lift at high speed, particularly through the inclusion of a Kamm tail. The wheelbase was also lengthened to improve stability and provide more space for the rear occupants. A ZF 5-speed gearbox was standard, and the engine was a 4 liter triple carbureted variant of the lovely alloy twin-cam inline-6 designed by Tadek Marek. The car was a powerful and elegant sports touring car, one which remains a timeless blue-chip classic thanks to its blend of all the ingredients that make a classic car quintessentially appealing. Mechanically innovative, rare, attractive, high performance, and with a touch of star quality lent by James Bond’s famous DB5, the DB6 is an ideal all round classic.

This particular car is a lovely restored matching numbers example with $74,753.84 of invoices for recent work from Aston Martin restorer Kevin Kay Restorations, widely regarded to be among the preeminent Aston Martin DB specialists in North America. Included in this work was the complete rebuild of its matching numbers engine, extensive suspension work including the fitment of Harvey Bailey and Steel Wings suspension upgrades, conversion to 5-speed manual transmission and much other work. The engine was balanced and upgraded to 4.2 liters with new pistons and rebuilt in its entirety with new bearings, new valves, new valve springs, new valve guides, Steel Wings rear main seal upgrade, reground crank which was magnafluxed and nitride. The ancillaries were rebuilt as well, including carburetors, alternator, water pump, and radiator. A new electronic double SU fuel pump was installed and Pertronix electronic ignition fitted. The car also received Harvey Bailey billet rear shock absorbers, extensive suspension upgrades from Steel Wings including adjustable front coilovers, front sway bar, and uprated rear springs.

The car was converted to electric power steering using components by GTC in the United Kingdom. The system provides variable assist and can be completely defeated with a knob on the dashboard. The system is nearly undetectable visually, with only two wires visible in the engine compartment and no visible signs inside the car. Cruise control was also added as well, along with a complete Steel Wings 5-speed manual transmission conversion to replace the automatic. Prior to the extensive work by Kevin Kay, the car was in long term storage in Los Angeles, and in the United Kingdom before that.

The car is cosmetically attractive, with very nice driver level presentation. The body is straight and displays good panel fit and gaps. The paintwork was done to generally high standards, although there is the occasional small chip, a stress crack in the paint at the base of the front windscreen, and a few areas of orange peel. The body appears to be very solid aside from a few small superficial bubbles at the bottom front corner of each door, about 2 or 3 on each door, the largest of which is slightly larger than a pencil eraser. The chrome is excellent other than on the bumpers, which have no pitting, but some swirl marks. The glass and lights are excellent, with Lucas H4 headlamps and original Triplex glass other than the windscreen, which is a replacement item in near new condition, also made by Triplex. The chrome wire wheels are excellent and sit on Dunlop tires.

The interior has superb patina and smells uniquely British in the best possible way. The leather seats are wonderfully mellowed and supple while the remainder of the interior shows very little wear. The contrasting deep red carpets are high quality wool and excellent, as is the wool headliner. The dashboard and instruments are excellent throughout and are beautifully designed. The radio is a period Motorola unit. The steering wheel has excellent wood and horn button, besides a small crack in the horn button surround.

The engine compartment is in excellent shape. The engine, intake, carburetors, and ancillaries are in spotless condition, with very few miles since the rebuild, approximately 250 according to Kevin Kay. Accordingly, those components are beautifully detailed. The inner fenders and firewall were not restored and are in very sound original condition. The trunk was beautifully retrimmed with red wool to match the interior. The undercarriage is solid across the board, unlike many RHD cars, which tend to suffer from rust. The sills appear original and unmolested as does the rest of the structure other than the rear radius arm boxes, which have been rebuilt and are now solid.

The car is an absolute joy to drive. The chassis and suspension are solid, reassuring and well-resolved. The car is simultaneously a comfortable grand tourer and an exhilarating driver’s car and the upgraded suspension integrates seamlessly with the driving experience, which is not always the case with modified cars. The gearbox is a pleasure to use with a modern, mechanical feel with well defined gates and excellent synchromesh. The engine is extremely well tuned and starts easily with the properly set up choke. It is extremely responsive, sounds wonderful and accelerates the car authoritatively. The power steering operates seamlessly and a drive in the car quickly dispels any reservations about the fitment of such a system to the car.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a thoughtfully upgraded matching numbers DB6 that has been prepared with no expense spared by one of the best in the business. It has a fresh motor and is ready to enjoy. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, making an ideal car for events, touring, or the occasional outing. It comes with extensive records for recent mechanical work, as well as jack, original manual, and tool roll with tools.
