Description

1967 Austin Mini Race Car
s/n CA2S7873223
Red with Black Interior

Introduced in 1959, the original Mini is widely regarded to be one of the most important and influential cars of the 20th century. With its front engine front wheel drive layout, the packaging was very efficient and economical, and established the pattern for small cars that is still the standard. Additionally, the car is as important for cultural reasons as it is for its automotive relevance. The cars are inseparable from the image of the swinging 60’s, and were and remain popular among the average person, stars, and even among motorsports enthusiasts thanks to the fine handling and small dimensions. The cars proved to be successful in competition events in period as well as today, and are an absolute riot to drive in any form.

This particular car is set up for racing use and has vintage club racing history as well as a log book. It is a right hand drive example with full roll cage, fuel cell, and 4-speed straight cut gearbox. The engine is a 1275cc unit with Weber carburetor, 11 to 1 compression ratio, JE pistons, and Carillo connecting rods. The current owner purchased the car in 2006, at which time the motor had one race weekend on it. The current owner has used it at one test day since so the motor remains a low hours unit. It is currently fitted with Plexiglas windows but the original glass windows are included. Additionally, the car has three spare Panasport wheels and four steel wheels with hubcaps.

The car displays good racer cosmetics, with attractive paint and chrome, although the paint has plenty of surface scratches, chips, and other signs of use. The chrome is very good, with minimal pitting and scratching. The Plexiglas windows show some scratches and crazing, but the glass windows are included with the car. The lights and lenses are in good shape. The flares add an aggressive aesthetic and allow the fitment of wider wheels and tires.

The interior is functional and Spartan. It has a full roll cage and racing seats, with OMP harness on passenger’s seat and Willans harness for the driver. The dashboard still has wood trim, which is delaminating in places. The central speedometer remains though it is inoperative. A vintage Stewart Warner tachometer, and vintage oil and water gauges have also been fitted. The steering wheel is a thick-rimmed Personal item with alcantara finish.

The engine compartment is functional and imposing with aluminum valve cover and large Weber carburetor. The ignition system has been upgraded with MSD coil and ignition box. Aeroquip fittings are employed and there is a functional purposefulness to the engine compartment that is consistent with the car’s racing setup. The trunk houses the fuel cell and Optima battery.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a capably prepared vintage race car that represents excellent value. The motor was built to high specifications and is well-suited to the car’s competition purpose, and the rest of the preparation also indicates a serious competition mindset. These cars have a well-deserved reputation for tremendous entertainment and smiles per dollar factor, and this car is sure to deliver in that regard.
