Description

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4
s/n 9737, Engine No. 9737
Rosso Nearco with Black Leather

The 4-cam 275GTB is in many ways the holy grail of road-going classic Ferraris. Impossibly beautiful, rare, and mechanically sophisticated, it embodies everything that makes classic Ferraris sought-after and unique. The first 275’s appeared in 1964, employing an enlarged 3.3 litre version of Ferrari's venerable Colombo-designed V12. The car featured many innovative features not found in the earlier 250, including a rear mounted transaxle for improved weight distribution, independent rear suspension, and 5-speed transmission. Both three and six carburetor versions were available, and the cars were continuously developed, as was Ferrari's convention. In 1966, the definitive and ultimate street version of the 275 appeared, the 275 GTB/4. In addition to employing the even more beautiful “long nose” body and rigid torque tube enclosed drive shaft introduced partway through the 2-cam model’s production, the big news was the dual overhead cam cylinder heads. In conjunction with the six carburetor setup that was now standard, the dual overhead cams allowed power climb to the magic 300hp mark. Just 280 4-cam 275’s were built, and they are extremely desirable investment grade Gran Turismo automobiles.

This particular example, s/n 9737, is a matching numbers, Ferrari Classiche certified, fully restored example, complete with books and tools. Competed in June of 1967, it was sold new as a left hand drive car on cast magnesium wheels, painted red with black interior, to Mr. Morettino in Italy via Crepaldi, the Ferrari dealer in Milan. Mr. Morettino exported the car to South Africa where he kept the car for some five years selling only to purchase a new Lamborghini Muira SV which was also shipped to South Africa . The Ferrari was purchased from Mr Morettino by Howard J. Cohen, Johannesburg, South Africa. The car spent a further eight years in South Africa before Cohen sold the car via DK Engineering to Roland Duce of the United Kingdom. Mr. Duce kept the car for a decade; and during that time had respected Ferrari Specialists DK Engineering & Mototechnique convert it to right hand drive format, and fit it with an outside filler cap & roll bar. After painting it Grigio metallic, and re-trimming it in blue leather hides, Mr. Duce sold the car to his fellow countryman, Anthony Pozner. Shortly thereafter Pozner sold it to Mr. Andreas Papathomas, also a UK resident. Papathomas had the car painted Rosso Chiaro and re-trimmed in Crema leather by Terry Hoyle Engineering. In 1993 the car was sold to Pearl Management, a company partially owned by previous owner Anthony Pozner. By that time, the car showed just 19,950 miles and was registered on new UK plates VBY 162E. During this ownership period the car was painted silver and was used by Mr. Pozner in a number of events in Europe and the UK including Tour Auto, Historic Targa Floria Revival, Modena Centro Ore Classic, Tour Espana, and various concours events in UK including Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was again repainted in 2000 in Rosso Chiara, still with with crema leather trim. In 2000, it was driven in the Modena Centro Ore Classic by Anthony Pozner/ Nicholas on race #104. Some years later, in 2006, it was driven on the Tour Espana Competition Rally by A Pozner/N Pozner. The car is damaged in a single vehicle accident during heavy rain. Navigator later succumbs to injuries suffered in this accident. Following this, s/n 9737 was sold to Oakfields, and onward to Oldtimer Garage Australia, whom purchased this GTB/4 for the purpose of restoration.

On arrival in Australia the vehicle was checked over, engine subjected to leakdown and compression tests, and test run. The transaxle, and other mechanical components, were also tested. The accident damage was generally sheet metal in nature, and the car was driven a short distance prior to repairs and restoration. Shortly thereafter the total restoration began, using Cavallino concours standards as benchmark. The vehicle was stripped to a bare shell and carefully converted back to left hand drive. The restoration work was meticulously carried out to highest international standards using original parts wherever possible. Work was completed by Oldtimer Garage Australia in conjunction with Bellbrae Panels, Autosprint Motors, Red Label Trim, Tom Shaughnessy, Concours Restorations, and other associated companies and individuals in USA, Europe, and Australia.

In October, s/n 9737 was imported from Australia to California to complete the final touches on the restoration. Considerable finish work has been done by the highly respected Patrick Ottis & Company, who have a long history of producing Pebble Beach and Cavallino winning cars. Within the scope of this work, the engine was opened, inspected, and reassembled from the crankshaft up using proper replacement parts where required. Dyno results from June 22nd, 2012 showing 263.5 horsepower at 6800rpm are available upon request. Other works included the adjustment and alignment of the transaxle, fuel, brakes, and carburetion systems, and a four wheel alignment. Care has been taken to insure that the car is absolutely correct in equipment and finishes. As one example, the hard brake lines which run the length of the engine- although almost impossible to see- have been completely re-plumbed in the correct copper plated steel lines as original. The resulting car is a highly correct piece, running and driving as originally intended by Enzo Ferrari. As quoted by Patrick Ottis, who welcomes inquires from seriously interested parties, “No drips, no runs, no errors.” Mr. Ottis proudly stands behind all the recent work performed.
