1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4
s/n 10291, Engine No. 10291
Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather
The 4-cam 275GTB is in many ways the holy grail of road-going classic Ferraris. Impossibly beautiful, rare, and mechanically sophisticated, it embodies everything that makes classic Ferraris sought-after and unique. The first 275s appeared in 1964, employing an enlarged 3.3 litre version of Ferrari's venerable Colombo-designed V12. The car featured many innovative features not found in the earlier 250, including a rear mounted transaxle for improved weight distribution, independent rear suspension, and 5-speed transmission. Both three and six carburetor versions were available, and the cars were continuously developed, as was Ferrari's convention. In 1966, the definitive and ultimate street version of the 275 appeared, the 275 GTB/4. In addition to employing the even more beautiful “long nose” body and rigid torque tube enclosed drive shaft introduced partway through the 2-cam model’s production, the big news was the dual overhead cam cylinder heads. In conjunction with the six carburetor setup that was now standard, the dual overhead cams allowed power climb to the magic 300hp mark. Just 280 4-cam 275’s were built, and they are extremely desirable investment grade Gran Turismo automobiles, among the most desirable Ferrari road cars ever produced.
Originally delivered in black with tan leather, this particular GTB/4 is a matching numbers, clean history example, with a fresh engine rebuild from the crankshaft up by Patrick Ottis and Company. Save for the fully detailed engine bay, its cosmetic presentation is older, making it an ideal example for a relatively straightforward cosmetic restoration. Few GTB/4s we have had the opportunity to drive have proven to be as well sorted, properly adjusted, or as fun to take to redline as this wonderful example.
Sold new by SEFAC Ferrari S.p.A. to first owner Gaetano Maria Zafferri of Parma, Italy on 3 August 1967, s/n 12091 was regularly serviced by the Ferrari Factory Assistenza Clienti in Modena for the for the initial two years and 17,000 km of its life, prior to being sold to its second owner, Agenzia Pomelli of Caserta (Sicily), Italy. In the early 1970s, the car was exported from Sicily to the USA, where it was purchased by long-term owner and Ferrari enthusiast Dr. Norm Hagman, of Rockford, Illinois in approximately 1976. Retaining the car for 38 years, Dr. Hagman showed the car with some regularity in Ferrari National meets at Mid-America Raceway and Stouffer’s Pine Isle Resort near Road Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2009-2010, Dr. Hagman had a complete engine rebuild performed by world renowned Ferrari service and restoration experts Patrick Ottis and Company. The rebuild work was performed was extremely comprehensive, encompassing all ancillary components. Also included in this effort was a thorough detailing of the engine bay, such that the future owner of this example need not worry about the condition or correctness of the equipment under the hood of this exceptional motor car.
The balance of the car is also mechanically outstanding. The transaxle shifts beautifully both warm and cold, with precise gear selection. The brakes are effective and pull the car down straight, without pulsation. The steering box is beautifully adjusted, with the car tracking straight and predictably at on center, regardless of road speed. The freshly rebuilt engine pulls strong and crisp, right to redline. The ignition and carburation systems are flawlessly adjusted, and the car absolutely sings. Save for the clock, all the gauges appear functional.
The cosmetic presentation of this example is uniform, with patina and an attractive honesty that is difficult to find. The body is straight and displays good panel fit and gaps. There is no corrosion visible other than two or three bubbles in each door, each no larger than a pencil eraser. The paint is older, dating back to the 1970s, and shows some checking and scratches while the wheels are correct and intact, though the paint on them is showing age. The chrome is in very good condition with light pitting and surface scratches only. The lights and glass are in generally good condition. The windscreen appears to be original with VSI etching, and the balance of the glass also appears to be original. One rear lens has a hairline crack and there is a crack in one of the headlamp covers. The headlights are correct Carello items, which have mild desilvering to the reflectors.
The interior appears to be in very nice original condition other than the carpets and the upholstery on the seats and center console, which were redone many years ago. The door panels appear to be original leather and are well-preserved. The headliner also appears to be original and is in similar condition. The dashboard is in beautiful condition and is correctly presented throughout. The dash pad is in excellent shape, as are the switches and instruments. The car is fitted with a period Blaupunkt radio. The seats and center console are upholstered in incorrect vinyl. The steering wheel is excellent original condition overall with two hairline cracks to the horn button and some wear to the varnish on the wood rim.
The engine compartment is very nice, having been capably detailed at the time of the rebuild. All components that were part of the rebuild are in excellent near show condition, while remaining components were cleaned but not necessarily restored. The inner fenders appear to have been repainted, while the visible frame and suspension components were not. Anything involved in the rebuild, including the airbox, engine, exhaust, horn compressor is in beautiful, freshly-restored condition. Overall, the engine makes a strong impression and its appearance is consistent with that a of high end driver, and could be brought to show-ready condition with relative ease if the car is cosmetically restored. The trunk appears to be original and visible structural components are correct and clean in appearance, supporting the sympathetic ownership that the rest of the car indicates.
