Description

1968 Ferrari 330 GTC
s/n 11035, engine no. 11035
Black with Grey Leather

Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330 GTC is highly sought after today. These cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today`s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube.
Because of its elegant understated lines and classic Ferrari layout the 330 GTC is finally emerging from years of under-appreciation. Just 600 330 GTC were constructed between 1966 and 1968. While many GTC owners have large collections of important Ferraris, their GTC will often be the choice car for driving events.

This very well documented and attractive example was completed in November of 1967 and sold new to Italy in February of 1968. Reportedly, it was sold new to movie director John Ford, although this is not easily substantiated. After a short stay on the European continent, the car was shipped to the western United States where it spent most of its life in Arizona and California. Fantasy Junction sold this car to its current owner in 1990, at which time it was a marvelously well kept, ultra original example with just 66,000 kms. This was confirmed during a pre-purchase inspection by famed Ferrari expert and national level concours judge Patrick Ottis, who proclaimed it to be `among the most original 330 GTCs he has ever seen`. Patrick continued to maintain the car for the current owner until he relocated to Nevada, when Bert Skidmore of Intrepid Motors (professional restorer and vintage racing prep shop) began taking care of the car. In 1990 Mr. Ottis performed a top end engine rebuild, transaxle overhaul, and suspension service. Mr. Skidmore performed an engine rebuild in 2001, and with the car comes over $40,000 in receipts from Intrepid Motors as well as those from Patrick Ottis detailing this work. The current owner regularly enjoys the car 2,000-3,000 kms a year. At this time the car can be described as a well sorted example mechanically, which is ready to enjoy.

Cosmetically, the car presents very well. It received a bare metal up repaint by well known Ferrari paint expert Brian Hoyt at Perfect Reflections in the early 1990s which presents extremely well today. The body was found to be exceptionally straight and rust free, requiring virtually no repairs. The gaps are even and straight throughout. The chrome looks to have been restored at the time of the repaint and show almost no wear or ageing anywhere. With the exception of the Carello headlights and windshield- which are probably original and have very light pitting- the balance of the window glass and lenses are like new.

The interior was re-trimmed in the 1990s in beautiful grey upholstery as is very good condition. The seats, headliner, dash, and door panels all have a fresh look and are free of any major blemishes. Removable cloth inserts have been fabricated, but are not permanently attached. The dash wood veneer is of the correct finish, and the gauges are in excellent condition. Like the interior, the trunk was reupholstered in high quality black wool carpeting and has a fresh look to it.

The engine bay is nicely detailed, and although perhaps a touch below show standards, is in keeping with a very nice driver. The car has a tidy mechanical appearance, and shows all the signs of proper mechanical up keep. Even the often missing battery hold down is present. Like the engine bay, the underside is not freshly detailed but is solid, and well looked after mechanically.

This example has been thoroughly serviced, and accordingly, drives very well. It starts easily and has good power with minimal smoke and that wonderful V12 exhaust note we all know and love. The rebuilt transaxle is smooth and precise with excellent syncros, even when cold. The brakes are effective and the suspension reasonably tight. All the gauges appear to be fully operational, with the exception of the clock.

With this example comes copious documentation for the current ownership period and before, copies of the factory build sheets, a reprinted owner`s manual, and a very complete replacement tool roll in like new condition. Also included is the matching one-piece wheel with unused tire.

This is an exceedingly well-looked after example of a truly desirable car. The 330 GTC offers, even among Ferraris, a fantastic driving and ownership experience, and this car has been maintained by the some of the finest names in the industry. The maintenance was comprehensive and without regard for expense, making this example appealing in both rational and emotional senses.
