Representing the then new trend towards mid-placement of engines in sports racing cars, the 330 P4 is a development of a series that began with the 250 P and 250 LM in 1963. Featuring Lucas fuel injection and a sophisticated and aerodynamic new chassis/ bodywork combination, the 250`s were replaced by the 330 P series, of which the P4 was the ultimate development. Just three examples of the P4 were built, making them among the rarest Ferraris in existence. Naturally, they are owned by collectors and thus, high quality reconfigurations with Ferrari engines, and alloy bodies of the original style and construction type, have garnered the interest of enthusiasts seeking the experience of owning and driving one of the world’s most important automobiles without the out-of-reach price tag or uneasiness associated with enjoying such a valuable car.
This particular example is reportedly the first built, and was completed by Norwood Performance in the late 1980s for Joe Marchetti, a Chicago area importer of Italian sports cars. The engine is a 4.8 liter V12 from a Ferrari 400 GT and is equipped with six Weber carburetors. The transmission is a durable Porsche 911 G50 unit with hydraulic clutch. Marchetti owned the car until 1993, when its current owner purchased it. During the period, the car was never street driven, and only used on the track a handful of times. It was maintained at considerable expense, including replacement of clutch hydraulics, rebuilt starter and brake service. The car has seen minimal recent use but has just been fitted with new tires and fuel pump.
The car displays good cosmetics. The paint was done to good racer standards, although close inspection reveals some flaws, particularly in the rear clamshell, which has orange peel and some cracking to the finish. There are a few other minor scratches and chips around the car. The lights are in good shape and the car is equipped with headlights and turn signals, which should make it legal to street register in many states. The glazing is Plexiglas and is in good shape overall, with minor surface scratches. The rear lamps are Carello units as would be employed on a 250 Lusso.
The interior is very Spartan and functional, with little upholstery. The dashboard and floors are black-painted metal, while the seats have red upholstery that is in good shape. The sills are also upholstered, which is appreciated during ingress and egress thanks to the wide sills. The steering wheel is the famous and iconic Momo Prototipo, while there is a full complement of instruments that provide much information, although no speedometer is fitted. The overall feeling is overwhelmingly functional and businesslike, rather than being a showplace. The engine compartment is extremely impressive, with six Webers and fully visible transaxle, drivetrain, and rear suspension.
This is a thrilling opportunity to acquire a very impressive car. Widely regarded to be one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever created, the P4 is impossibly rare. This car is available at a small fraction of the cost of an original, and authentically captures the qualities of the P4 that made it so unforgettable, from the stunning bodywork, to the raucous V-12 soundtrack.
