Description

1967 Ferrari 330 Spyder Speciale
s/n 10079, Engine no. 10079
Burgundy and Silver with Tan Leather

We are pleased to offer 1967 330 GTC sn 10079. S/n 10079 was re-bodied in the theme of a 250 MM Vignale Spyder over a ten year period from 1995 to 2005. This fun-inspiring commemoration to the 250 MMs of 1953-54 is truly a gorgeous masterpiece. Finished in blemish-free Glasurit Dark Red (SR353.50) and Silver (MB 180), the same color scheme that was original to 250 MM s/n 0274. The interior is finished in Connolly Tan leather with medium brown carpets and a wood steering wheel. This car has been well sorted and dialed in by a very knowledgeable owner.

The original 330 GTC frame was modified to move the engine rear-ward a full ten inches. This results in better weight distribution than a 330 GTC but still retaining the wide stance, coil-over shocks, four wheel disc brakes and 5-speed transaxle of a much more modern Ferrari.

The body is hand-crafted in aircraft aluminum to closely resemble but not duplicate a 250 MM Vignale Spyder. The entire car is several centimeters wider than a 250 MM to accomodate the more modern running gear and the tail has been lengthened to hold the gas tank in front of the shock towers and to provide a spare tire well, in keeping with more safe and modern design trends. The lights and the instrumentation are either original from a 166 -250 series car (e.g. tachometer - date stamped Dec 1951, Carello turn signal lights, ignition switch, turn signal switch, high-low beam stalk) or faithful replicas (taillights, steering wheel and horn, hood and trunk hold-downs). The seat frames and Connolly leather were fabricated and fitted by Lake County Upholstery. License was taken in installing driving lights behind the grill, a style not uncommon to 1950s era Ferraris, but not used on any of the Vignale bodied 250 MMs. This also holds for the riveted fuel tank (a surround for the ATL racing fuel cell) and Monza style fuel cap.

The original 4-litre 300 hp type 209 motor from s/n 10079 was rebuilt. It has been updated by the installation of needle bearings for the rocker followers, a more aggressive cam profile, a 6-carb 40 DCN Weber setup with velocity stacks, the elimination of the oil cooler plumbing and the use of a MSD electronic ignition. Daytona racing headers made by Joe Alphabet were installed with Jet Hot coating. The original crankshaft was reground to standard specifications with standard bearings. Rods and pistons are original specification and four new cylinder liners were installed. While the engine was not dyno-tested, it is probably good for 330-340 hp.

S/n 10079 has just completed a nut and bolt inspection, and correction of a non-operational hand brake and temperature gauges, at Symbolic Service in La Jolla, California. At the same time the compression and leak down figures were checked confirm the engine is in excellent health with compression results between 150-160 lbs on all 12 cylinders, with not more than 6% leak down. Additional service work included a four wheel alignment, shift linkage adjustment, fabrication of a new grille, and attention to the clutch slave cylinder for a total of $15,972. This 250 MM themed replica is easily the best looking, best performing and best priced Colorado Grand, California Mille or Copperstate 1000 Ferrari on the planet. Priced far below replacement cost at $475,000 o.b.o., trades considered.
