1967 Ferrari 365 California Spyder s/n 10327, Engine no. 10327 Rosso Chiaro with Tan Leather Interior The 365 California Spyder was the ultimate development of the extremely sought after 250 long and short wheel base California Spyder line built between 1957 and 1963. Forty two long wheel base 250 California Spyders were built, followed by fifty one short wheel base examples. Just fourteen 365 California Spyders were produced in 1966 and 1967, making them, by far, the most limited production run of these outrageously elegant convertibles. The low-lying, streamline body lines of the 365 California Spyder are punctuated by the enclosed headlights and dramatic side air vents which integrate the door handles. The elongated, flat trunk line, and unique tail light fixtures act like an exclamation point to the statement this car makes as it drives by. Serial number 8347 was the prototype for the 365 California Spyder line, introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 1966. This car, s/n 10327, was among the very last California Spyders produced, and one of just two that were not originally constructed with pop up fog lights. Finished in November of 1966 it was imported to the US when new through Chinetti Motors in July of 1967 to be sold to Mr. Ettinger of Greenwich, Connecticut. It was fitted at the factory with air conditioning, power windows, power steering, safety belts, and a Baupunkt Koln radio. It was painted in its current rosso chiaro (metallic red), but with white leather interior. The car has subsequently been reupholstered to a much more tasteful tan leather interior, and has been fitted with pop up fog lights as the great majority of the 365 California Spyders were. Mr. Ettinger sold s/n 10327 to notable collector Harley Cluxton of Scottsdale, Arizona in 1975, who sold the car in 1979 to Luigi Chinetti`s ex-partner Al Garthwaite with just 27,000 miles logged at that time. Garthwaite owned the car until the early 1990s and showed the car at the Turner Ferrari Festival in Mitchelville, Maryland in 1989. In the late 1990s the car was restored by Alan Taylor & Co., and painted in its original rosso Chiaro. The records from new support the car having been mechanically maintained throughout its life. More recent service work includes a major engine service and carburetor overhaul, and a new clutch installation at 31,000 miles. The current owner bought this car from Fantasy Junction in early 2005, and had Ferrari expert Patrick Ottis perform another major service at that time. Since then the car has logged only a few hundred miles. The current mileage is 36,321, which is accurate and verified by the records. It is believed neither the engine nor transmission has been rebuilt from new, and both are in excellent, fully operational condition. The engine starts easily and pulls strong with minimal smoke and that fantastic 365 exhaust note we all know and love. Second gear syncro is very good both when warm and cold. With the exception of the autoflux switch, all the gauges and switches are working. All the lights, including the pop up fog lights, are fully operational. The a/c system is functioning, and blows moderately cold. The windows roll up, although somewhat slowly. The current condition of the car cosmetically is representative of a very well taken car of 10 year-old restoration with about 5,000 miles on it. Over the years, a few use marks have appeared in the paint; 6-10 small rock chips on the frontal area, and one in the driver`s door. The repaint, done in the original color, was an extremely high quality job. The chrome and stainless trim is excellent, as are the all the glass and lenses. This car is equipped with a black canvas soft top in like-new condition, covered by a black canvas tonneau. The car sits on beautifully polished Borrani wire wheels with near new Michelin Radial X tires. The interior is in impeccable condition. The front and rear seats, door panels, and dash leather is all in un-marked, near perfect condition. The elaborate dash and console wood is perfect. All the factory gauges and switches are in place. The black carpets are also in excellent condition. The engine bay looks to be predominantly original, and still has the correct yellow fuel lines, and the complete a/c system fitted. While nicely detailed and more than presentable, the overall condition of the engine bay is a touch below national show standards. The underside was detailed as part of the restoration, and still appears fresh and clean. The trunk has been re-carpeted, and is in very good condition. With the car are records back to new, all the importation and delivery documentation, articles written about this car, the complete tool roll, and two jacks with jack bags, spare Borrani wire wheel with tire, and emergency triangle. This notable car has been the feature of articles written in Road and Track from November of 1966 by Jonathan Thompson, Cavallino No. 6 from August of 1979 by Gerald Roush, Club Ferrari France No. 17 from 1983 by Marcel Massini, Ferrari FOC UK Vol. 18, No. 3, issue no. 17 by Keith Bluemel, and in Supercar Classics, Japan, 1989 by Kiyondo Sato. With all the 250 series California Spyders fetching $2.0 million or significantly more, this very limited production, covered headlight example is a fantastic buy at just half the price.
