Employing a similar formula to the AC Cobra, the Sunbeam Tiger represents the quintessential British sports car with a twist. Using the modified chassis and body of the four-cylinder Sunbeam Alpine combined with Ford's venerable small-block V8, the prototype of the Tiger was constructed by Shelby at Sunbeam's request. The resulting car was put into production, which was handled by Jensen, and just over 7000 examples were constructed between 1964 and 1967. The Tiger was manufactured in three series, Mk. I, Mk. IA, and the most advanced and powerful of the production run, the Mk. II, which were originally equipped with 289 cid Ford power plants. Of the total production, just 536 were true Mk. IIs.

This particular car is a genuine Mark II, the 120th example built. It is an original 289 cubic inch car, a left hand drive roadster specification car with non-standard specification, per the decoded VIN. It was sold new to John C. Whisenhunt of Houston, Texas, and he retained the car until 1975. Its next owner, also of Houston, was Dale Painter, and he retained the car for 26 years until 2001, at which point it was imported into Australia by its third owner, Malcolm Clark. The car had been off the road since 1977 and as one of Australia’s foremost Sunbeam experts, Malcolm set about performing a comprehensive and correct restoration, selling the car once it was complete to Ray Graham, also of Australia, who kept the car from 2005 to 2014. Since the restoration, the car has covered fewer than 1000 miles and remains an impressively correct and crisp example. It is a STOA certified example.

Cosmetically, the car makes an excellent impression, with a lovely stock appearance that is very difficult to find in Tigers. The body is straight with good panel operation and fit, and the paint is very nice, with a few minor blemishes on close inspection, but an overall presentation consistent with a car that has covered few miles since a high caliber restoration. There are a few small swirls and touch ups, but the paint is otherwise difficult to fault. The chrome is in very nice shape, with a few swirls and light scratches. The glass and lights are excellent, including the Lucas headlamps. The steel wheels with hubcaps are correct for the car but rarely seen as they were invariably replaced with mags on the majority of Tigers.

The interior was also restored to high standards and is in excellent shape. The upholstery and carpets are very nice, both in terms of condition and workmanship. The dashboard was restored in its entirety, including the upholstery, wood, instruments, and switches. The correct banjo spoke steering wheel is in place, with nicely refinished wood rim. The dashboard wood is in excellent shape, as are the instruments, switches, and controls.

The engine compartment was also restored, as was the engine itself. The presentation is crisp and very clean throughout and it is clear that this aspect of the car was done as comprehensively as the rest of it. The valve covers are chromed and in excellent shape, as are the painted surfaces such as inner fenders. The ancillaries were also restored and present as-new. The trunk was comprehensively restored with new paint, including the spare tire well and spare. New upholstery was fitted as well and the jack and tool roll are both in place, indicating the attention to detail and thoroughness of the restoration.

The car runs and drives very well. It is an exceptionally tight example, with minimal rattles, taut suspension, and virtually no steering play. The throttle is linear and responsive and the engine runs very well, starting easily and showing good carburetion. It makes great power and pull the car authoritatively while making trademark V8 noise. The brakes are effective, and the gearbox has a robust but precise feel.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a genuine Mark II Tiger that is exceptionally correct and undisturbed. It has had few owners from new and has a wonderful period feel, right down to the chromed wheels with whitewall tires. It was thoroughly restored to high standards, both from a cosmetic standpoint, and given how well it drives, a mechanical standpoint as well. It is a well-resolved and nicely dialed car that is ready to enjoy. It is complete with hard top, miscellaneous documentation (including copy of 1975 title), tool roll, and jack.
