Like the AC Cobra, the Sunbeam Tiger represents the quintessential British sports car with a twist. Using the modified chassis and styling of the four-cylinder Sunbeam Alpine combined with Ford’s venerable small-block V8, the prototype of the Tiger was constructed by Shelby on Sunbeam’s request. The resulting car was put into production, which was handled by Jensen, and just over 7000 examples were constructed between 1964 and 1967. The Tiger was manufactured in three series, Mk. I, Mk. IA, and the most advanced and powerful of the production run, the Mk. II, which were originally equipped with 289 cid Ford power plants. Of the total production, just 500 were true Mk. IIs.

This particular Mk. II was constructed in early 1967, during the final year of production. It was equipped for the US marketplace, as a left had drive car. It is accompanied by Sunbeam Tiger Owner’s Association Certificate of Authenticity issued in 2009, and has been the subject of a total nut and bolt, ground up restoration, performed in a no-expense-spared fashion.

The currently installed engine is a Ford 302 cid unit producing 345 horsepower, although the original 289 cid Ford engine is also included with the sale along with the 4-speed transmission. A 5-speed transmission is fitted, as is a 3:31 ratio posi-traction rear end. Disc brakes have been mounted to all four corners, as have Koni shock absorbers. The rear shocks are adjustable. The steering column was rebuilt by Jim Leach in California. The restoration also included virtually every cosmetic aspect of the car including paintwork from a bare metal shell, chrome, upholstery, and engine bay and underside detailing to exceptional standards. On file, and included with the sale, are records and in-process photos relating to the restoration efforts which stand about 2 inches thick.

The resulting car is an exceptionally executed piece, and is truly a joy to drive. Many, if not all of the common Sunbeam Tiger shortcomings have been resolved making the steering, handling, and braking more precise, and the car much more user friendly for year-round enjoyment on the road. The cosmetic presentation is certainly better than when new, and likely positions this Mk. II Tiger among the very best examples extent. It can be documented as a $100,000+ car when recently sold, and while perhaps not inexpensive, it does represent the very best money can buy.

Also included with the sale is the numbers matching 289 cid engine, and 4-speed transmission, the restored factory hard top, an original Sunbeam Tiger Mk. II ‘289’ Rootes Group owner’s handbook, and a jack.

Perhaps no other streetcar of the era taps into the primal concept of small car-big motor so much as the Sunbeam Tiger. With a generous power to weight ratio, and very short wheel base, the Sunbeam Tigers are very exciting cars. This example, which is beautifully restored and very well sorted, is truly phenomenal in every way.
